About The Position

The City of Markham is seeking a Maintenance Assistant for a 12-month contract position within the Sustainability and Asset Management Department. This role is responsible for general repair, maintenance, and replacement at City of Markham facilities, encompassing carpentry, plumbing, electrical duties, mechanical repairs, HVAC systems, and other related maintenance tasks. Requirements

  • Related College diploma or trade certification (plumbing, electrical, mechanical HVAC)
  • 3-5 years of related experience
  • Ability to complete specialized work in plumbing, electrical, woodworking is required
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and to identify customer needs in a timely way along with the ability to either bring effective resolution to the Customer concern/s or escalate the issue/s to management as appropriate
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with colleagues as assigned, including the ability to support one another when required and communicate positively and effectively with one another in order to provide service excellence
  • Intermediate computer skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Valid class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license. As a condition of employment you will be required to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract (No demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions - max of one moving and one non-moving conviction)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of welding and building automation systems is an asset
  • Certification in Standard First Aid with CPR C and propane handling is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Complete facility maintenance and repairs, including plumbing, electrical, door locks, carpeting, rough carpentry, and other duties as assigned
  • Operates heavy equipment and power tools
  • Sets own schedules, priorities and plans projects
  • Involved with coordinating resources and contractor materials
  • Direct and liaises with contractors
  • Conducts annual and monthly inspections
  • Shift work including weekends may be required
