The Maintenance Apprentice develops foundational technical knowledge and practical experience supporting the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of manufacturing equipment and automated control systems. Working under the guidance of experienced maintenance professionals, this role participates in preventative maintenance activities, equipment repairs, system testing, and process improvement initiatives while completing a structured apprenticeship program. The position combines classroom education with hands-on experience to build the technical competencies required for a successful career in industrial maintenance and automation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Currently enrolled in, or accepted into, a community college, technical school, apprenticeship program, or other accredited program in Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Basic understanding of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, or automation principles obtained through coursework, technical training, or personal experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents with guidance.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn industrial maintenance practices.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment.
  • Must provide basic personal hand tools; specialty tools are provided by the company.
  • Ability to successfully complete a Powered Industrial Truck medical assessment and obtain forklift certification.
  • Ability to work assigned schedules, including overtime or alternative shifts, as business needs require.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in PLCs, industrial controls, electrical systems, mechatronics, robotics, or industrial automation.
  • Exposure to hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, or industrial electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial control systems, SCADA systems, or industrial networking through education or laboratory experience.
  • Experience using basic hand tools or power tools through school, vocational training, military service, or personal projects.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the installation, setup, and commissioning of manufacturing equipment, control systems, and automation technologies under the direction of experienced maintenance personnel.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance activities to support equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and production performance.
  • Learn to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation-related equipment issues while following established maintenance procedures.
  • Support the maintenance, programming, configuration, and testing of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), sensors, and related automation equipment.
  • Assist in monitoring equipment performance, identifying potential maintenance concerns, and reporting findings to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Learn to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, technical drawings, equipment manuals, and maintenance documentation.
  • Participate in equipment inspections and functional testing to verify equipment performance and compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, equipment documentation, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with maintenance technicians, engineers, production teams, and other departments to support safe and efficient manufacturing operations.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and comply with all company policies, environmental requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Participate in technical training, classroom instruction, and on-the-job learning opportunities to develop maintenance and automation competencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business objectives.
