Machinist - 2nd Shift

GROB•Bluffton, MN

About The Position

The CNC Machinist independently sets up, operates, and optimizes 5-axis machining centers to produce custom precision-machined components according to engineering drawings and specifications. The role involves advanced machine setup, program editing, selecting tooling and fixturing, and determining and adjusting cutting speeds and feed rates to maintain product quality, dimensional accuracy, and production efficiency. The machinist troubleshoots machining issues, performs routine machine maintenance, and completes complex assignments with minimal supervision. The position is for second shift, Monday through Thursday, four days per week, and requires a willingness to work that shift for at least five years. Second-shift positions receive a $4.00 shift premium. The role may also require working overtime and, temporarily or permanently, on first or second shift based on business needs.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of progressive CNC machining experience, including advanced setup, operation, troubleshooting, and process optimization.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience operating and setting up 5-axis machining centers.
  • Advanced proficiency with Siemens and/or Mazatrol CNC controls, including navigating controls, modifying programs, adjusting machining parameters, and troubleshooting operational issues.
  • Ability to independently set up and machine complex components with minimal supervision.
  • Extensive experience interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and machining specifications.
  • Strong understanding of metric measurements, dimensional tolerances, precision measurement techniques, and applied mathematics.
  • Extensive knowledge of cutting tools, tool geometry, tooling applications, work-holding methods, and fixture selection.
  • Advanced understanding of cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cut, machining strategies, and their effects on tool life, surface finish, and part quality.
  • Ability to resolve complex machining challenges while maintaining production efficiency and quality requirements.
  • Experience selecting machining processes and developing setups based on part design, material properties, and production requirements.
  • Ability to perform dimensional inspections with precision measuring instruments and determine whether components meet specifications.
  • Experience troubleshooting machining equipment and identifying opportunities to improve processes and reduce cycle times.
  • Sound judgment, independent decision-making, analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to precision, quality, and safe work practices.
  • Ability to manage assignments with minimal supervision and work independently and collaboratively with manufacturing, engineering, and quality personnel.
  • Willingness to work second shift Monday through Thursday for at least 5 years.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required and to work first or second shift, temporarily or permanently, according to business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute machining processes, including machining sequences, fixturing methods, tooling selections, and work-holding strategies.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical documentation to determine machining requirements, tolerances, and manufacturing methods.
  • Select, install, and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, and work-holding devices based on material, part geometry, and machining operations.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues, identify causes of dimensional inaccuracies or equipment problems, and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform machine setups, tool changes, offset adjustments, and program modifications.
  • Inspect machined components with precision measuring instruments to verify dimensional accuracy and compliance with specifications.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and assist with mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Safely handle, transport, and position raw materials, tooling, fixtures, and finished components using appropriate material-handling equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment and follow safety procedures and manufacturing standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and share machining knowledge with team members as needed.
  • Perform additional duties to support manufacturing operations and production objectives.
