About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a Machinist II to join the JETSII contract! This is a CBA union position. The Machinist II will plan, layout, machine and assemble to precision tolerances parts and tools designed to meet exacting standards and specifications consisting of mechanical or specialty apparatus. They will set and operate a variety of machining equipment such as engine and bench lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, job borers, grinders, hones, gear cutters, and drill presses, to fully utilize most functions of the machines. The role involves planning and determining, under supervision, the sequence of machining operations, number of cuts required to obtain required finishes and tolerances, and determining cutting tools to be used and method of holding and aligning work. They will make complete layout on parts involving compound angles and exacting mating part work, to check for sufficient stock and for reference during machining. The Machinist II will set up machines to completely and independently perform any operations within their capacity, select, mount, and align various specialized machine attachments and standard or improvised tooling, and determine, set, and adjust machine speeds, feeds, and depth of cut. They will select, mount, and fasten cutting tools for specified finish and best performance consistent with the type of material being machined. This may be performed under direct supervision if complex, or independently. The role includes checking own machine set up and parts run for conformance to blueprint specifications, and may be required to grind own tool bits and drills. The Machinist II may offer technical direction to engineers and customers on pre-fabrication, modifications, or repairs. They will work from detailed drawings, templates, sketches, assembly blueprints, or oral instructions. They will operate the machines to perform typical operations such as chasing all types of single and multiple external tapers; turning, boring, reaming, facing, slotting, etc., for any type of machine fit; machining parts involving compound angles or concentric and coordinated concave or convex surfaces to exacting tolerances; may include instruction from more experienced machinists. The role requires the ability to program and operate in at least one CNC language. Additionally, the Machinist II will train less experienced machinists, perform general inspection of work, maintain a clean and organized work area, organize and properly store inventory, materials, and safety equipment, and use of lift equipment as required. Related duties as required will also be performed.
