About The Position

The primary purpose of a Machinist is to set up and operate manual & CNC machines to produce precision parts and instruments. Performs a variety of manufacturing operations related to fabrication and/or machining of precision parts and/or sheet metal for use in the electronic industry and/or manufacturing assembly. The position applies knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The position may require routine machine maintenance and programming capabilities.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior machining experience or 2 years post-Secondary/associate’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior machining experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CAD cam (Mastercam and Autocad are a plus), Haas and Hurco controls.
  • Manual and CNC machining experience in a high technology manufacturing environment, including setting up machine tools, lathes, and milling machines.
  • Programming for Mastercam.
  • Accurately set up and operate CNC machines.
  • Program, set up, and run a vertical machining center for one off prototype parts or production parts run.
  • Experience reading/interpreting blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications.
  • Experience making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds and speeds.
  • Able to work independently, without direction, with all types of processes and prototype development instructions, including prints, sketches, schematics, memos, notes etc.
  • Able to work with minimum supervisory guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders.
  • Set up, adjusts, and operates all the basic machining tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Maintain the tools and machines required for optimum job performance.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments, such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Work from drawings, work orders, and instructions covering production parts or tooling requirements.
  • Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
  • Set controls to regulate machining, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized CNC machine control media.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge in the operation of all metal working tools and machines, and the ability to determine the most efficient and economical methods of producing all materials and hardware related to or used in the construction of dies, fixtures, gauges, gigs, and tools.
  • Construct, modify, or repair a wide variety of product parts, subassemblies, and related tooling.
  • Set up and operate a variety of machine shop and/or sheet metal fabrication equipment.
  • Understand and comply with customer specification in part manufacturing.
  • Understand and use a wide variety of mathematical functions applicable to work tasks.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T).
  • Demonstrate effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work in a team environment on research and solution development.
