About The Position

Shell Canada is seeking a Lubricants Technical Advisor – Mining (also known as Senior Technical Advisor - Mining internally). This role is exclusively dedicated to supporting the oil sands business. The ideal candidate would be based in Fort McMurray; however, candidates located elsewhere in Alberta will also be considered. The Lubricants Technical Advisor – Mining provides expert guidance on lubricant applications, performance optimization, and equipment reliability. The role offers on‑site support to maintenance and reliability teams, with a focus on troubleshooting, inspection services, identifying cost‑reduction opportunities, and enhancing asset performance through value‑improvement initiatives. This is a remote role, meaning you will work from a home office when not in the field, with frequent business travel (50–60%) to Fort McMurray, AB, to perform field‑based technical activities while engaging with Shell’s Platinum oil sands customer. You collaborate closely with Shell’s sales teams and customers to deliver tailored technical advice and product recommendations, troubleshoot complex lubrication challenges in the field, demonstrate the commercial and operational value of Shell’s lubricant solutions, and support the deployment of new technologies and services that enhance customer performance.

Requirements

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Petroleum, or Chemical Engineering, or a diploma in Technology with a specialization in Industrial Heavy Equipment, Materials, Mechanical, Petroleum, or Chemical fields, or in any other related technical discipline
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in lubricants and their applications in mining/heavy construction
  • Extensive knowledge in mining, heavy construction, or related industries, with hands-on mechanical aptitude and strong critical thinking skills
  • Must be willing and able to travel 50–60%
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Fluency in English

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Lubrication Specialist (CLS), Machinery Lubrication Technician (MLT), Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA), and/or Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic are highly valued
  • Experience in a customer-facing or technical sales support role is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the dedicated technical contact for a major oil sands mining customer
  • Provide front-line technical support, including problem-solving, application advice, and troubleshooting
  • Lead lubricant specification and application support for oil sands mining fleets and fixed‑plant assets, ensuring compliance with OEM requirements
  • Conduct lubrication assessments and surveys, identify rationalization opportunities, and lead field trials
  • Support maintenance and reliability teams with on-site inspections and value-driven improvement projects
  • Offer specialized expertise in automated lubrication systems and open gear lubrication
  • Perform operational and shutdown inspections of critical mining equipment using diagnostic tools and techniques to advance reliability objectives
  • Deliver technical training to build product and application knowledge
  • Provide guidance on HSSE, occupational health, and product handling/disposal best practices, ensuring compliance with relevant local legislation
  • Escalate complex technical challenges to the Team Lead or the Product Application Specialist, collaborating on resolution
  • Utilize sales tools and standardized documentation templates in alignment with global standards to deliver Value-Led outcomes
  • Consistently act in accordance with Shell’s Global Business Principles, Code of Conduct, and HSSE standards and policies
