The LPN Medication Nurse works in a children's hospital serving children ages 5 to 12 and adolescents ages 13 to 19 who are experiencing psychiatric crises. The program assesses and stabilizes psychiatric symptoms through individualized treatment plans, with the goal of returning consumers home or to the least restrictive level of care as quickly as possible. The estimated stay is three to ten days. Nurses in the medication role complete admissions, provide nursing and personal care, prepare and administer medications and wound care, and observe consumers’ physical and mental status. They recognize and report medication side effects and other clinical findings, support crisis de-escalation, provide medication education, and participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and hand-offs. The role also includes training new employees, maintaining supplies and records, following facility policies, and working on any unit as directed by management.
