About The Position

Middle school athletics can shape how students see themselves long after the season ends. For some students, this will be their first experience competing on a school team. They need a coach who will teach the game, recognize their potential, and create an environment where effort, improvement, teamwork, and character matter. The Lakeside Middle School 7th Grade Head Volleyball Coach will lead student-athletes as they develop volleyball fundamentals, confidence, resilience, and pride in representing their school. This is an opportunity to build a positive team culture where students feel supported, challenged, and motivated to grow—both as athletes and as teammates.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Current First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain certification before the start of the season.
Ability to meet Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint-clearance requirements.
Ability to complete required WIAA coaching education and district-directed training.
Knowledge of volleyball fundamentals, skill development, game strategies, and safe coaching practices appropriate for middle school students.
Ability to plan and lead organized practices and supervise student-athletes effectively.
Ability to communicate appropriately and professionally with middle school students, families, coaches, school personnel, and administration.
Commitment to student safety, positive relationships, sportsmanship, and equitable treatment of students.
Ability to work collaboratively with other coaches and the Athletic Director.

Nice To Haves

Previous volleyball coaching experience at the middle school, high school, collegiate, club, or comparable level.
Previous volleyball playing or instructional experience.
Experience working with middle school-aged students.
Knowledge of the developmental, social, and behavioral needs of middle school students.
Experience organizing practices, evaluating athletes, managing competitions, and maintaining team records.
Skill in encouraging young athletes while providing clear, constructive, and age-appropriate instruction.
A student-centered coaching approach that promotes confidence, skill development, teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship.
Ability to build a positive, organized, and inclusive volleyball program.

Responsibilities

Lead and organize the Lakeside Middle School seventh-grade volleyball program.
Plan and conduct organized, purposeful, and age-appropriate practices.
Teach volleyball fundamentals, including serving, passing, setting, hitting, movement, positioning, communication, teamwork, and game awareness.
Provide instruction that supports athletes with varying levels of experience and ability.
Evaluate student-athletes fairly and consistently for team placement when multiple seventh-grade teams are formed.
Establish clear expectations for attendance, effort, conduct, sportsmanship, academic eligibility, and team participation.
Create a positive and inclusive team culture that promotes confidence, accountability, resilience, respect, and enjoyment of the sport.
Provide appropriate supervision during practices, competitions, travel, locker-room use, and other assigned team activities.
Maintain appropriate team discipline and model professional, respectful, and sportsmanlike conduct.
Prioritize student safety and follow district procedures for injuries, concussion management, sudden cardiac arrest awareness, emergency response, and reporting concerns.
Communicate team schedules, expectations, program information, and student concerns effectively and professionally with athletes, families, coaching staff, school personnel, and administration.
Work collaboratively with the eighth-grade Head Volleyball Coach, assistant coaches, and Athletic Director regarding practices, gym use, competitions, player development, equipment, and program needs.
Provide direction and support to an assigned assistant coach when an assistant position is authorized.
Maintain appropriate records relating to participation, eligibility, injuries, equipment, uniforms, and other assigned program matters.
Properly manage, inventory, distribute, collect, and store volleyball equipment and uniforms.
Follow applicable WIAA, league, district, school, and athletic-department rules, procedures, and expectations.
Maintain required certifications and complete all required district and WIAA training.
Perform other related coaching duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
