Literacy Support Specialist
About The Position
The Literacy Support Specialist will provide districtwide oversight and leadership for the implementation of Michigan's dyslexia legislation, including Public Act 146. This role ensures that instructional practices, assessments, interventions, documentation, and professional learning align with state requirements. The specialist will also model effective instructional strategies, facilitate study groups, coach and mentor colleagues, and train teachers in data analysis and differentiation. Additionally, the specialist will work with teachers to ensure fidelity in the implementation of evidence-based reading programs, train teachers to diagnose and address reading deficiencies, help increase instruction density, and support reading leadership teams. The role involves continuous learning in best practices in reading instruction and intervention, and modeling/coaching whole- and small-group instruction with students in grades K-3.
Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience, preferably in a K-3 setting
- Sufficient knowledge of evidence-based reading research
- Special expertise in quality reading instruction (and infusing reading strategies into content-area instruction)
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree and advanced coursework in reading or have completed professional development in research-based literacy instruction strategies
Nice To Haves
- Advanced degree in reading/literacy
- Working knowledge of multi-tiered systems of support
- Background in creating and evaluating successful Title I programs
- Knowledge of current state literacy standards for students in grades K-3
- Previous experience training or presenting information to educators
- One-to-one or group educator coaching experience
- Successful implementation of various literacy programs, strategies, and models
- Ability to breakdown and analyze data in relation to the MTSS process and instructional decision making
- Experience with a range of benchmarking and screening assessments in the area of literacy
- Working knowledge of Google Drive, Gmail, and calendar
- Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to develop strong relationships with school staff

- Continue to increase his or her own knowledge base in best practices in reading instruction and intervention
- Model and coach whole- and small-group instruction with students, for teachers in grades K to 3
