About The Position

Under the leadership of the Director, Laboratory, the LIS Analyst/Point of Care Coordinator is an active member of the Laboratory and IT team that works to determine the strategic vision, goals, philosophy and direction of the Lab department and CRHS. The LIS Analyst/ Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for the analysis, development, and support of lab related applications and may provide customized reports, queries, menus, interfaces, and other programs as needed for system end-users in the lab and other clinical areas. In addition, the LIS Analyst/ Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for completion of routine day-to-day processes for the LIS as well as other interfaced and/or associated systems, to include monitoring system parameters and assuming a role in the coordination of end-user training and generation of reports. The LIS Analyst/ Point of Care Coordinator is responsible for all areas of the organizations Acute Point of Care delivery. The LIS Analyst/ Point of Care Coordinator has IT skills as well as a lab background.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma with an emphasis in science and the successful completion of a formal medical technician training; or two years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience; an Associate’s Degree in medical laboratory technology; or the successful completion of two years (90 quarter hours) or the equivalent.
  • Requires at least some training (either formal or OJT) in support duties for an LIS.
  • Requires two to four years of work-related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must clearly display an aptitude for acquiring a computer related skillset and at least some applicable experience in support of an LIS and/or related systems and interfaces.
  • Requires and maintains a minimum of a Medical Laboratory Technician certification from the ASCP, AMT, NCS, AAB or other approved agencies by the department.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that established standards, practices, policies, and procedures are followed, and that laboratory samples and specimen materials are prepared, screened, classified, and reported accurately and efficiently.
  • Oversees and/or conducts the procurement, receipt, and preparation of samples and specimen materials for examination.
  • Collects and prepares test data to validate procedures, modifications, and established normal values.
  • Records and reports test results, inputs test outcomes into the computer system, and contacts physicians and patient care staff to report critical or "stat" results.
  • Maintains accurate and complete laboratory records in accordance with Laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Assists IT to review lab access set up and support
  • Assists in coordinating the Quality Assurance program that monitors area activities in order to ensure the appropriateness, timeliness, and cost effectiveness of Laboratory services provided.
  • Maintains a comprehensive quality control program to include instrument maintenance, safety procedures, and preventive maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Ensures all areas are maintained in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Maintains inventory levels of laboratory supplies, prepares solutions and reagents.
  • Assists in the ongoing evaluation of laboratory procedures by gathering data and comparing results between existing and potential procedures.
  • Responsible for completing all Laboratory SR, test, order set, and charge builds/updates in a timely manner. This includes the acute and ambulatory space
  • Collaborates with Revenue Cycle on all lab charge related issues
  • Assists in updating the laboratory section service area policy and procedure manual.
  • Recommends and implements new technical procedures and practices to ensure accurate and efficient operation.
  • Provides orientation and instruction to new employees in proper lab techniques and procedures related to POC.
  • Ensures that all safety and infection control policies and practices are observed.
  • Ensures that the LIS test compendium and lab related data dictionaries stay up-to-date at all times and in synchronization with any systems used for lab outreach and/or reference lab purposes.
  • Sets up new analyzers in the HIS/LIS as required.
  • Opens, monitors, tracks, and responds to lab related tasks with the HIS/LIS vendor(s) as needed.
  • Serves on Laboratory committees, as appropriate and as requested.
  • Utilizes personal past lab experience and background to assist lab staff, nursing staff, and medical staff in using existing lab application software in the most efficient and effective manner
  • Conducts needs assessments with the lab staff and other clinical staff members related to lab application software uses and expectations.
  • Evaluates software alternatives based on assessed needs and recommends the best practices for use of lab related applications as well as other clinical applications as needed.
  • Maintains a current working knowledge of the EMR, LIS, lab related applications, and other clinical applications as needed as well as their associated data dictionaries.
  • Assists in performing application and equipment updates/upgrades as needed.
  • Monitors HIS lab applications, identifies problems, and suggests possible solutions/alternatives.
  • Assists lab and other clinical departments in the implementation of new application software and updates to existing software.
  • Develops custom reports, queries, menus, extract/downloads, interfaces, and other programs for clinicians and physicians as required
  • Communicates with vendor personnel for troubleshooting applications whenever required.
  • Coordinates efforts of vendor contract personnel for pre-implementation readiness assessments as well as post-implementation assessments as needed.
  • Works efficiently and effectively toward the successful completion of team goals and objectives.
  • Provides input to IT Director for project planning and progress updates.
  • Attends IT and Lab staff meetings
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance and quality for all Point of Care testing within the hospital
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including acting as a liaison with the IT department to assist in the testing and validation of bi-directional HL7 interfaces between the LIS and any lab outreach and/or reference lab platforms as well as interfaces transmitting data between lab instruments and the LIS.
