About The Position

The Lifeguard works under the direction of the Aquatics Director and/or Aquatics Coordinator to help ensure the safety of pool patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. The role requires strong safety awareness, sound judgment, and a courteous, reliable, mature, and professional approach as a representative of the YMCA. Lifeguards help the Auburn Y operate its aquatic programs safely and effectively, support participants’ physical fitness, and maintain the YMCA’s positive image in the community.

Requirements

Be at least 16 years of age.
Hold current YMCA Lifeguarding certification or equivalent.
Hold current Basic First Aid certification through ASHI or equivalent.
Hold current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification through ASHI or equivalent.
Hold current Emergency Oxygen Administration certification through ASHI or equivalent.
If currently certified through another organization, obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within six months of hire.
Demonstrate safety consciousness, sound decision-making skills, and good judgment.
Be courteous, reliable, and friendly, with a mature and professional demeanor.
Be aware of the risks to pool patrons if the essential functions of the position are not performed.

Responsibilities

Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area.
Maintain order and understand, uphold, and enforce pool rules.
Prevent accidents whenever possible and respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies in and around the pool.
Submit written reports to the Aquatics Director about accidents, rescues, potential danger areas, damaged equipment, discipline problems, and complaints.
Attend staff meetings and training sessions designated by the Aquatics Director.
Secure the pool by locking all doors when the pools are closed and no lifeguard is on duty.
Keep current with information relating to lifeguarding.
Complete additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Adhere to and comply with Auburn YMCA-WEIU policies and procedures.
