About The Position

Oakland County is seeking a Lifeguard to join their team at Red Oaks Waterpark. This role involves maintaining a safe swimming environment, supervising water activities, enforcing safety rules, responding to emergencies, and assisting with general maintenance and cleaning. Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old for waterparks.
  • Pass the four-day mandatory unpaid International Lifeguard Training Program that includes passing a three-part exam: physical condition, written and a hands-on practical.
  • Must be proficient in and able to communicate effectively and verbally in the English language.
  • Pass the employment physical established for this classification.
  • Complete 200 yard swim using crawl or breaststroke without resting.
  • Feet first surface dive and retrieval of a 10 pound brick from a minimum depth of 8 feet.
  • Treading water for 2 minutes without using arms (hands above water).
  • Exit pool without use of ladder, steps or zero depth exit.
  • Vision standard: 20/25 corrected or uncorrected vision and have near acuity, depth perception, ability to distinguish details closely and at a distance.
  • Ability to listen, understand and distinguish sounds and speech and respond accordingly in the English language.
  • Lifeguards must be able to perform rescue skills in the working environment and must be able to demonstrate the ability to work efficiently within the parameters of an established Emergency Action Plan.
  • Lifeguards must be able to exit from a pool at any point without the use of ladders, steps or a zero-depth exit.
  • Participating in the ILTP requires that lifeguard candidates be in good physical condition.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency and ability to communicate effectively and verbally in the English language.
  • If assigned to a youth recreational program, prior to employment, candidates will be required to provide Parks & Recreation with documentation from the Michigan Department of Human Services (previously called Family Independence Agency) that they have not been named in a central registry case as the perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect.
  • Applicants being considered for hire will be asked to sign a form authorizing Parks & Recreation to request and receive a criminal history check in accordance with the privacy act of 1974.
  • Applicants for positions at Parks & Recreation will not be considered if they have been convicted of either of the following: (a) Child Abuse or Neglect. (b) A felony involving harm or threatened harm to an individual within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise swimming and water activities to help ensure a safe environment for all patrons.
  • Enforce safety rules and respond to emergency situations, including providing first aid and communicating with emergency personnel.
  • Interact with patrons by answering questions and addressing concerns.
  • Participate in weekly in-service training to maintain valid lifeguard license requirements.
  • Assist with general maintenance and cleaning duties.
  • Supervises and monitors the daily swimming and water activities.
  • Maintains and ensures a safe swimming environment for all Oakland County Parks patrons using established techniques.
  • Provides general Customer Service by interacting with patrons in a courteous manner, answers inquiries regarding directions, operations, and emergency procedures.
  • Handles emergency situations that may arise during open operations, including providing first aid as necessary and communicating effectively and verbally with emergency personnel.
  • Coordinate with emergency services, such as 911 and EMS/Fire personnel effectively and verbally.
  • Use provided warning services to control and assist patrons in emergency situations.
  • Assists with the general maintenance of the water park equipment.
  • May teach swim lessons to individuals of all ages.
  • May be assigned to general cleaning duties which includes, but is not limited to; picking up loose litter, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms and maintaining a 30 minute bathroom check, pulling trash bags, weeding, and sweeping.
