About The Position

The Graduate Practical Nurse Inpatient performs selected nursing functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The incumbent is a non-licensed healthcare provider employed by Erlanger who is responsible for direct and/or indirect patient care. The Graduate Practical Nurse Inpatient demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. S/he must be familiar with the assessments and treatments of patients within the unit. The incumbent demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, interpreting the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs. Provides the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing and eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam for licensed professional nurse (LPN).
  • Knowledge of practical nursing principles and practice skills.
  • Medical background required.
  • Proof of graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing (final school transcript, copy of diploma, or letter stating NCLEX-PN eligibility and test date.)
  • Spring graduates must pass NCLEX-PN exam and obtain Tennessee Practical Nurse Licensure by October 1st; Fall graduates by May 1st.
  • Tennessee licensure must be obtained within three months of hire date.
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and to be maintained going forward.
  • Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents.

Responsibilities

  • Performs selected nursing functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Provides direct and/or indirect patient care.
  • Provides direct patient care including procedures, activities of daily living and operates equipment necessary for patient care as assigned.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
  • Familiar with the assessments and treatments of patients within the unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
  • Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, interpreting the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
  • Provides the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures.
