About The Position

The City of Richmond Public Library seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking person to join its team as an Part Time, entry Level Library Technician at the West End Branch Library. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is a self-starter, excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes exceptional customer service. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower. This position will require some days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) scheduling on a rotating basis. Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of public library related support experience
  • Considerable knowledge of routine and advanced clerical and other support services to assist patrons with their needs.
  • Proficient in math and should be able to use the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Comfortable using computer software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Knows how to use the standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge of cash register procedures.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to train volunteers, interns, AARP, and work-study students on library processes and procedures.
  • Ability to promote and coordinate library events such as children’s story time, art-committee, and other programs and clubs.
  • Ability to create displays, flyers, and other promotional materials.

Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service
  • Performs circulation desk duties: Checks out materials for patrons, processes returned materials, issues, updates, and replaces library cards
  • Opens and closes registers, rings up payments and purchases, makes change for currency, collects money for fines and other fees, and counts funds for reports
  • Answers phones, sorts mail, and distributes them accordingly
  • Assists patrons with simple to complex requests such as pay for printing, hands out headphones and returns collateral, closes computer lab at the end of day
  • Maintains computer database to remove patron ID number
  • Shelves books and other materials in proper order; Sort and organizes library materials
  • Circulates library materials to customers
  • Assists patrons find materials or other pertinent information either online, in-person, or over the phone, as well as anticipates patrons’ needs and makes material recommendations
  • Fields patrons’ inquiries
  • Promotes and coordinates library events such as children’s story time, art-committee, and other library programs and clubs
  • Creates displays, flyers, and other promotional materials
  • Participates in staff development and training when offered
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
