About The Position

ICF is seeking a versatile, onsite Library Technician to join our team. This role will support the physical processing of a substantial collection of print materials for our National Library of Medicine client. The technician will utilize mixed methodologies to analyze the collection and adhere to established workflows for processing and ensuring its discoverability. A key responsibility involves reading titles, authors, and available metadata in Alma, comparing this information with physical copies of the collection in English and other Western European languages. The role also requires executing physical processing tasks, such as adding barcodes and preparing materials for storage, while employing proper handling and preservation techniques. Experience with MARC21 records is mandatory, and in-depth cataloging experience is considered a valuable asset. The position reports to a library processing manager. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, task-oriented problem solver capable of multitasking and meeting strict deadlines in a dynamic environment. This position is based in Bethesda, Maryland.

Requirements

  • 1+ year of experience executing the physical processing of collection materials.
  • 1+ year of library and cataloging experience (e.g., use of and familiarity with MARC21, any library services platform, Cutter Sanborn Tables, etc.)
  • Ability to obtain a public trust clearance.
  • Read titles, authors and available metadata in Alma and compare the information with the physical copies of the collection in English and other Western European languages.
  • Executing the work using proper handling and preservation techniques, as applicable, while completing the physical processing (e.g., adding barcodes, preparing for storage, etc.).
  • Experience working with MARC21 records.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying MARC bibliographic records based on the review of a physical item.
  • Searching/matching 19th and 20th century publications in Alma to find matching bibliographic records.
  • Completing the physical processing of the collection materials, at minimum including adding call numbers and appropriately re-housing fragile items in archival envelopes and/or protective slings, etc.
  • Updating existing cataloging records, including bibliographic, holdings, and item records.
  • Flagging potential duplicate items for review; coding duplicates in Alma for review and batch deletion.
  • Following guidelines for specific materials to assure all records created follow NLM policies and appropriate national and international standards.
