About The Position

Edmonton Public Library is looking for a fun, agile customer service expert to join their team as a Library Assistant. This position involves working outside traditional library settings through the epl2go literacy vans, taking library programs into the community for people of all ages to learn, create, play, collaborate, and discover. The role also provides regular support to the Shelley Milner Children's Library and the Children's Makerspace downtown. The ideal candidate is energetic, organized, and enjoys driving regularly.

Requirements

  • An Information Management/Library Technology diploma or a directly related diploma with significant course content focused on education or community work, or an undergraduate degree from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of one year's work experience in a library or an environment where customer service is a core focus.
  • Valid Alberta driver's licence (Class 5).
  • A minimum of two years of driving experience.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office programs, web-based services and other applications.
  • Experience in developing and presenting programs for customers of all ages.
  • A commitment to upholding the Canadian Federation of Library Associations position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Enthusiastic with the ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated excellence in using communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to contribute positively and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Comfortable with facilitating classes and events using new technologies.
  • Ability and knowledge to assist customers with the use of technology, devices, information resources (print and electronic) and in the use of various service applications and web based platforms.
  • Proficiency with technology including PC's, Microsoft Office applications, mobile devices, e-readers and social software.
  • The ability to operate a van and regularly perform a variety of physical tasks in order to load and unload the vehicle.
  • Effective and creative problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Satisfactory background screening, including a 5 year Driver Abstract and a Criminal Record Check/Police Information Check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating a large vehicle such as a van or truck.
  • Experience with a wide variety of creative technologies.
  • Experience in providing reference services and readers' advisory services.
  • Particular emphasis on programming for young children.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service as an ambassador, connecting people to resources and services.
  • Be active in the community, visiting schools, daycares, and other organizations.
  • Develop and present programs for customers of all ages, with an emphasis on young children.
  • Assist customers with the use of technology, devices, information resources (print and electronic), and web-based platforms.
