About The Position

Edmonton Public Library is looking for a fun, agile customer service expert to join their team as a Library Assistant. This position is based in the Shelley Milner Children's Library and Children’s Makerspace downtown. The role also involves supporting the epl2go literacy vans, which deliver library programs to the community. The ideal candidate is energetic, organized, and enjoys driving. Library Assistants at EPL act as customer service ambassadors, connecting people with necessary resources and services. They are involved in community outreach, visiting schools and other organizations. The role requires individuals who are tech-savvy, curious, and eager to share knowledge.

Requirements

  • An Information Management/Library Technology diploma or a directly related diploma with significant course content focused on education or community work, or an undergraduate degree from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of one year's work experience in a library or an environment where customer service is a core focus.
  • Valid Alberta driver's licence (Class 5).
  • A minimum of two years of driving experience.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office programs, web-based services and other applications.
  • Experience in developing and presenting programs for customers of all ages.
  • A commitment to upholding the Canadian Federation of Library Associations position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in using communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to contribute positively and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability and knowledge to assist customers with the use of technology, devices, information resources (print and electronic) and in the use of various service applications and web based platforms.
  • Proficiency with technology including PC's, Microsoft Office applications, mobile devices, e-readers and social software.
  • The ability to operate a van and regularly perform a variety of physical tasks in order to load and unload the vehicle.
  • Effective and creative problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Satisfactory background screening, including a 5 year Driver Abstract and a Criminal Record Check/Police Information Check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating a large vehicle such as a van or truck.
  • Experience with a wide variety of creative technologies.
  • Experience in providing reference services and readers' advisory services.
  • Particular emphasis on programming for young children.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service and act as a customer service ambassador.
  • Connect people to library resources and services.

  • Facilitate classes and events using new technologies.

  • Perform frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, reaching, pushing, and pulling book carts.
  • Load and unload the epl2go vehicle, performing a variety of physical tasks.
