About The Position

Edmonton Public Library is looking for a fun, agile customer service expert to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic customer service ninja (aka Library Assistant) who enjoys working with the public within the Shelley Milner Children's Library and Children’s Makerspace downtown. This position will also provide regular support for the epl2go literacy vans, which take library programs into the community, providing hands-on opportunities for customers of all ages to learn, create, play, collaborate, and discover. The ideal candidate is energetic, organized, and enjoys driving. At EPL, the mission is to share. Library Assistants are versatile and friendly people who want to make a difference in the community. They serve as customer service ambassadors, connecting people to the resources and services they need. They are active in the community, visiting schools, daycares, and other organizations. They are tech-savvy, curious, and eager to share their knowledge with others.

Requirements

  • An Information Management/Library Technology diploma or a directly related diploma with significant course content focused on education or community work, or an undergraduate degree from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of one year's work experience in a library or an environment where customer service is a core focus.
  • A minimum of two years of driving experience is required.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office programs, web-based services, and other applications.
  • Experience in developing and presenting programs for customers of all ages is required.
  • A commitment to upholding the Canadian Federation of Library Associations position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Demonstrated excellence in using communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to contribute positively and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability and knowledge to assist customers with the use of technology, devices, information resources (print and electronic) and in the use of various service applications and web based platforms.
  • Proficiency with technology including PCs, Microsoft Office applications, mobile devices, e-readers and social software.
  • The ability to operate a van and regularly perform a variety of physical tasks in order to load and unload the vehicle.
  • Effective and creative problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
  • Satisfactory background screening, including a 5-year Driver Abstract and a Criminal Record Check/Police Information Check.

Nice To Haves

  • A Valid Alberta driver's license (Class 5) is preferred.
  • Experience operating a large vehicle such as a van or truck is an asset.
  • Experience with a wide variety of creative technologies is preferred.
  • Experience in providing reference services and readers' advisory services is preferred.
  • A particular emphasis on programming for young children is preferred.
