About The Position

This is a part-time position (20 hours per week) at the Trails West Branch, located at 11401 East 23rd Street S, Independence, MO, 64052. The role involves providing basic circulation and registration services, assisting patrons with library resources, and supporting various library programs. A key responsibility at the Trails West branch is assisting in the processing of United States Passport applications and training new staff on this process, requiring employees to meet specific requirements to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.

  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
  • Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions
  • Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles
  • Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level
  • Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs
  • Ability to understand and be understood in English is required
  • Meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent

Nice To Haves

  • Customer Service experience preferred
  • Proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili

Responsibilities

  • Checks materials in and out
  • Issues library cards
  • Collects fines and charges
  • Updates customer records in the computer
  • Verbally explains circulation policies and procedures
  • Makes other computer inquiries
  • Processes patron requests for reserve items
  • Maintains effective courteous working relationships with all library patrons and staff
  • Assists patrons with use of library databases, computer equipment, and software
  • Answers telephone by identifying self and location, and if unable to assist with the request, directs call to the appropriate staff person
  • Lifts, routes and shelves materials, which may weigh up to 35 pounds, from book bins and shelves
  • Processes patrons' request material
  • Prepares and sends Interlibrary Loan requests
  • Performs other related work and as assigned, such as Kid’s café, teen lock-ins, notary services and supporting programs or activities developed and promoted by other Library colleagues
  • Assists in processing United States Passport applications
  • Trains new staff on the passport application process
