About The Position

The Library Assistant provides basic circulation and registration services to ensure patrons have ready access to library materials. This role involves checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, collecting fines, updating patron records, explaining policies, processing patron requests, and assisting patrons with library databases, computer equipment, and software. The position also requires courteous interaction with patrons and staff, answering telephone inquiries, and shelving materials. Branch-specific duties include processing United States Passport applications at the Trails West branch, requiring staff to meet specific requirements to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent. Additional duties may include supporting programs like Kid's Café, teen lock-ins, and notary services.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with customers of all ages
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
  • Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions
  • Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles
  • Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level
  • Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs
  • Ability to understand and be understood in English is required
  • Proficiency in non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO (Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili) is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and send Interlibrary Loan requests
  • Perform other related work as assigned, such as Kid’s café, teen lock-ins, notary services and supporting programs or activities
  • Assist in processing United States Passport applications
  • Train new staff on the passport application process
