The Level 1 Trauma Emergency Department Nurse Director is responsible for identifying and acting on opportunities to gain competitive advantage and enhance organizational growth. This role involves developing and updating strategic plans, creating evidence-based policies and procedures, and enhancing the organization's image through community participation. The Director maintains an appropriate working environment, ensures proper distribution and utilization of personnel, and demonstrates a commitment to achieving organizational and departmental results. They hold employees accountable, develop and implement plans for regulatory compliance, and engage in regular self-performance appraisal, pursuing further education and certification. The position utilizes a Process Improvement (PI) approach for process design and nurse-sensitive indicators, ensuring timely completion of regulatory quality control. They use an interdisciplinary and shared governance approach to problem-solving and assure timely patient throughput through effective discharge planning and utilization of technology. The Director manages change within the department, service line, or organization, assisting in adaptation to the changing environment while ensuring appropriate workflow. They actively participate in communicating and preparing employees for change and participate in pilot studies for innovative processes. Effective communication, valuing diversity, and addressing controversial issues are key. The role involves establishing clear guidelines and expectations, fostering effective interpersonal relationships with the healthcare team, and networking with peers. Customer satisfaction programs and proactive patient/family interaction are also crucial. Financial accountability includes budget preparation, monitoring expenditures, justifying variances, and promoting cost-effective patient care delivery systems. The Director monitors and manages productivity to meet organizational benchmarks and follows procedures for requisitions and projects. Technical expertise in the specialty area, keeping pace with technology, evidence-based practice, and healthcare trends is essential. They ensure employee competence, share knowledge, and promote safe, therapeutically effective nursing care in compliance with legal scope of practice, hospital policies, and ethical standards. Maintaining a clean and well-supplied environment, ensuring compliance with patient safety goals, and maintaining a safe working environment for employees are also responsibilities. Leadership skills include conflict resolution, addressing unacceptable behavior, providing feedback, delegating authority, enhancing employee morale, and role-modeling professionalism. The Director is responsible for personnel management, including interviewing, selection, recruitment, retention, performance reviews, mentoring, and continuing education. They promote the Magnet spirit by facilitating unit councils, encouraging survey participation, posting Magnet information, ensuring staff representation on committees, and promoting nurse involvement in various initiatives. The role also involves assisting in achieving unit quality scores that meet or exceed hospital/national averages for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
