About The Position

The RN provides professional nursing services guided by the Transformation Model for the Professional Practice of Nursing. Accepts responsibility for the direction of co-workers in the implementation of the nursing care plan to maximize patient outcomes. The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing Emergency Department is a Verified Level 1 Trauma Center caring for adult and pediatric patients, with a 24/7 pediatric emergency department and 24-hour air medical transport.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates knowledge and maintains and respects patient right to privacy by following the HIPAA Privacy and Security policies and procedures.

  • Associates Degree in Nursing
  • Current State of Michigan license as a Registered Nurse
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association within 60 days of hire
  • Interpersonal skills for effective communication.
  • Computer literate

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association within 12 months of hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association within 12 months of hire
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification issued by the Emergency Nurses’ Association within 12 months hire
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification issued by the Emergency Nurses’ Association within 12 months hire

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate clinical patient activities in the absence of Department Manager or Assistant Department Manager.
  • Participate in shared decision making.
  • Assess patient condition and initiate appropriate nursing and/or medical care in accordance with established guidelines and evidence-based practice.
  • Develop and update an individualized plan of care based on the assessment of the patient in congruence with the medical diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Collaborate with patient and their available resources.
  • Implement purposeful plan of care, reflecting the uniqueness of each patient.
  • Evaluate patient outcomes and response to care, revising plan as needed.
  • Document assessment, plan, all care given and patient response in the patient record.
  • Educate patient/family according to assessed need using mutual participation model.
  • Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement activities within department, health system and/or community.
  • Perform nursing activities in accordance with Hospital policies and procedures, Michigan Public Health Code and ANA Scope & Standards of Practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of unit-specific equipment and appropriate supplies used to deliver the highest quality patient care.
  • Provide a safe environment for patient, family, and all other caregivers.
  • Support the development of self and other Associates and students through mentoring, preceptorship and peer review.
  • Accountable for professional development.
  • Utilize current evidence and research in practice.
  • Communicate appropriate significant information and changes in patient’s condition to members of the health care team.
  • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with members of the health care team, the patient and the patient's family.
  • Delegate, direct and supervise implementation of care plan to LPN, PCT, or other health care workers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
