About The Position

Under the supervision of a Senator, the Legislative Aide assists Senators by conducting research, analyzing, conceptualizing and drafting legislation, coordinating constituent communications and public relations, and providing administrative support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree. Relevant work experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Knowledge of the structure and operation of state government, the Legislature, and the legislative process.
  • Knowledge of the issues and interests of the Senator and senator's district.
  • Knowledge of office computer applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with Senators, legislative staff, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently, organize and manage work, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to produce quality work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule including working nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and summarizes research, including policy and data analysis, literature searches and legal research.
  • Drafts and prepares Senator's legislation and testimony, including writing statements of intent, organizing testimony, and meeting and negotiating with stakeholders.
  • Performs public relations functions, preparing and disseminating communications to the media, lobbyists, staff, constituents and the public.
  • Prepares speeches and bill presentations for a Senator.
  • Responds to constituent inquiries, concerns, and requests for information.
  • Monitors and summarizes bills, amendments, committee actions, and floor debate.
  • Disseminates information to Senators, legislative staff and external contacts.
  • Tracks and files media.
  • Prepares summaries, briefs, and reports on legislative matters.
  • Serves as office manager or lead worker in a Senator's office.
  • Creates communications for social media accounts and newsletters.
  • Attends meetings or events on Senator's behalf.
  • Delivers speeches and bill presentations on Senator's behalf.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
