About The Position

The ministry protects Alberta’s forest resources through effective and efficient wildfire management, sustainable forest management, and maintenance of forest health. The ministry works with Albertans, other governments, Indigenous communities, non-profit and voluntary organizations, and the private sector to grow the visitor economy and maximize the benefits of Alberta Crown lands, including forests, parks and rangelands. The Corporate Strategic Services Branch provides strategic leadership, direction and coordination of a broad range of planning, policy and administrative services for the department. The Governance and Legislative Services unit is responsible for the development and coordination of strategic policy decisions moving through the ministry and government’s decision-making process and coordinating the development of legislative and regulatory amendments that align with approved policy direction. The unit is also responsible for providing advice and support services for the effective oversight and governance of ministry agencies. As a Legislative Advisor within Forestry and Parks, you will be part of a collaborative team of legislative and policy specialists dedicated to ensuring that policy and legislation—including acts and regulations—are effectively coordinated and aligned across the ministry. This senior-level role is instrumental in supporting the ministry’s mandate by ensuring legislative instruments are consistent with the government’s policy direction. You will lead the development and amendment of legislation and regulations, guiding ministry program areas through the legislative planning and government decision-making process. Your responsibilities will include drafting and managing ministerial orders and orders in council related to the acts and regulations that govern ministry programs, preparing decision documents, and advising on policy and legislative development across all areas under the jurisdiction of Forestry and Parks.

Requirements

  • University graduation in a related field such as Public Administration, Legal Studies, plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
  • Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Nice To Haves

  • Law degree, or training or experience interpreting legislation, regulations, and legal frameworks
  • Knowledge of legislative processes and legal instruments, including drafting principles and processes
  • Experience with policy and Cabinet approval processes

Responsibilities

  • Lead ministry legislative initiatives and projects by providing timely and high-quality strategic legislative support, analysis, advice, recommendations, and issues management.
  • Provide and maintain information within tracking tools used by the department for legislative and regulatory planning and coordination.
  • Apply legislative expertise in leading and participating in projects to inform the development of sound legislation.
  • Work with program areas and legal services to develop drafting instructions for Legislative Counsel, ensuring the draft legislation or regulations reflect approved policy direction.
  • Support legislation and regulations through the government decision-making process, and Bills in the Legislature, that meet ministry policy objectives and help deliver on the ministry's mandate.
  • Provide guidance and advice to project teams on review and approval processes to foster efficiency and timely approvals.
