About The Position

The position coordinates office activities for attorneys performing a variety of legal secretarial duties such as scheduling hearings, preparing legal documents and correspondence, docketing cases and maintaining court dockets and office records, and providing information and direction to others. The work requires knowledge of legal, secretarial, and office practices. There are three levels: Legal Assistant I (intermediate, developing capacity), Legal Assistant II (experienced, full range of duties, exercises judgment), and Legal Assistant III (advanced, increased responsibility, liaison, research, and participation in advanced secretarial activities).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Legal Assistant I: Two (2) years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including one (1) year equivalent to administrative support experience.
  • Legal Assistant II: Five (5) years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including two (2) years involving legal secretarial practices equivalent to a Legal Assistant I.
  • Legal Assistant III: Seven (7) years of administrative support experience where use of a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, charts, etc., or to enter/retrieve/update information is an essential part of the work, including two (2) years involving legal secretarial practices equivalent to a Legal Assistant II.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must successfully pass a driving record check.
  • Some positions may require stenographic skills.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate office activities for attorneys.
  • Perform a variety of legal secretarial duties.

  • Interpret supervisor's point of view (Legal Assistant III).
  • Serve as liaison to the court system, staff, and higher-level management (Legal Assistant III).
  • Research and prepare materials for administrative decisions and briefs (Legal Assistant III).
  • Participate in other advanced legal secretarial activities (Legal Assistant III).
