About The Position

Kamehameha Schools, Legal Services Group, is looking for an experienced Paralegal to support our team of 5-6 Real Estate attorneys. This role will be responsible for opening and closing legal matters, drafting legal documents, performing research and analysis and more. Our ideal candidate will be a team player who thrives in a collaborative team environment and has the following experience… 3-5+ years of legal office/administrative experience Experience doing legal research, analysis and drafting legal documents Strong computer skills This is an on-site position at our Kawaiaha’o Plaza office. The Paralegal supports the Legal Services Group attorneys by performing legal research and analysis in various areas of law, as well as gathering and analyzing data. Responsibilities also include developing and maintaining systems to monitor projects, creating and maintaining databases, managing projects, obtaining information from within Kamehameha Schools and outside resources, and drafting legal documents and memos.

Requirements

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.
  • Associate's degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years related work experience.
  • Sound judgment and analytical skills with the ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Must be able to identify, clarify and resolve multi-part problems considering cost/benefit approach and effect of proposed solution.
  • Proficient working knowledge and/or experience in the legal division described above, and in a few of the following areas, including but not limited to employment, education, Native Hawaiian issues, family law, civil litigation, real estate investments, financial assets, corporate or real estate investments, other endowment-related issues, corporate governance issues, and contract analysis.
  • Proficient writing skills to prepare correspondence, memoranda, reports and legal documents.
  • Strong organizational skills required to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, prioritize changing workload, and coordinate with attorneys and client groups to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills to gather facts, analyze, organize and summarize information.
  • Working knowledge of Internet, Westlaw or Lexis-Nexis and/or other on-line legal information systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to meet with all levels of KS staff, public agencies, retained counsel, and others, as well as maintain open communication with peers in the community.
  • Advanced computer skills in Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and other Microsoft applications, and knowledge of legal e-billing systems (e.g., CounselLink), computer accounting systems (e.g., Peoplesoft), and matter tracking systems (e.g., NetDocs or other Legal Management system).

Nice To Haves

  • Paralegal Certification or analogous certification or education.
  • Knowledge of KS internal policies and procedures.
  • Ability to build databases and design and analyze complex data sets.
  • Notary Public designation.
  • Familiarity with ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi

Responsibilities

  • Provides paralegal support for KS attorneys with day-to-day needs of the respective divisions and the Legal Group in the following area: Real Estate - Supports client groups throughout the organization in areas relating to real estate, finance, financial investments, construction, procurement, corporate and entity governance, real estate leasing, real estate commercial transactions, conveyancing transactions, environmental, land use and zoning and water law. Supports development and/or review of training, policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and analyzes case and/or administrative files, documents, and other written materials to extract, summarize, digest, or abstract information required by nature of assignment or legal transaction.
  • Drafts general correspondence, routine notices, memoranda, and reports.
  • Under attorney supervision, prepares various legal documents for submission to courts, government agencies, legislature, and as necessary to complete transactions.
  • Conducts legal and information data research using all available resources including libraries, computer data systems, government agencies, documents, and individuals. Analyzes and summarizes research results.
  • Coordinates, organizes, develops, implements, and maintains tracking systems to monitor matters, projects and assignments, and deadlines.
  • Creates and maintains databases, summaries, tables, and charts to assist attorneys in projects and assignments.
  • Assists in organizing and maintaining matter files.
  • Contacts, confers, and meets with internal staff, clients, outside counsel, consultants, government agencies, and other external individuals to obtain and communicate information necessary for completion of assignments.
  • Reviews and analyzes legal invoice for compliance with KS retention and billing requirements including researching and analyzing variance issues.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and monitors division expenses.
  • Manages internal Legal Group projects as well as projects involving multiple individuals across the enterprise.
  • Performs other duties [including administrative] as assigned or requested to support the Division and/or Legal Group
