About The Position

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 1 in the Labor and Industries Division. This position is located in Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). The Labor and Industries Division represents and advises the Department of Labor and Industries regarding worker safety and health standards and citations, workers' compensation benefits, crime victims’ claims, worker fraud, and employer appeals of assessments of worker’s compensation premiums, which are litigated before the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals. The L&I division also represents and advises L&I on questions about fair wages and prevailing wage requirements, contractor and building issues, electrical citations, WISHA discrimination cases, and other issues for workers and employers. The division handles a wide variety of cases from entry level to highly complex matters and has a robust appellate litigation program. The work touches all businesses and workers in Washington and is of central importance to the business economy of our state. The Seattle LNI Division strives to make professional growth a priority and allow staff to develop their skills in areas of law that interest them, while still meeting the business needs of the section. Under the supervision of a Legal Assistant 3, this position performs complex clerical tasks within the Seattle Labor & Industries Division.

Requirements

  • Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year of experience in a legal environment
  • Option 2: Two years of legal office experience
  • Option 3: A combination of three years of college education and/or relevant experience
  • Option 4: A two year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of The Department of Labor and Industries and its various programs i.e. Worker’s Compensation, Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), Employment Standards, Employer Services/Audit, Building Trades.
  • Use case management software, such as Filevine, to create matters, enter data, find records, and run simple queries.
  • Experience in Outlook monitoring shared mailboxes.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with bulk or batch scanning.
  • Procedures of the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Notices of Appearance/Substitution using the Case Management System and e-file with the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals
  • Docket incoming mail for mediation paralegals
  • Receive service of legal documents and immediately route to the appropriate party
  • Enter receipt of new files into the Case Management System
  • Archive closed files
  • Provide MFD assistance to all staff in office (e.g., refilling toner, ordering toner, making service requests, troubleshooting paper jams)
  • Open new electronic case files and Case Management System matters for new superior court cases
  • Scan, process, sort and distribute incoming daily mail and deliveries
  • Monitor and route the e-service, fax, and case assignment electronic inboxes per division protocols and business rules
  • Inventory, maintain and track supplies for the division
  • Process incoming checks according to office protocols and policies
  • Process monthly invoices
