About The Position

The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 in the Labor and Industries Section of the Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Division. This position is located in Spokane, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). The Spokane Labor and Industries Section handles a variety of litigation on behalf of the Department of Labor and Industries including litigating workers compensation claims, building trades litigation, fraud cases, wage cases, and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act violations. Section attorneys practice in almost every legal forum – from the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA) and Office of Administrative Hearings to state appellate courts.

Requirements

  • Combination of four years of experience through: Paralegal certification, Two-year paralegal degree, Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification, and/or Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney OR One year experience as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State Service.
  • You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work.
  • Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney: Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence, Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents, Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates, Managing case documents, files and exhibits, Tracking and organizing discovery documents, Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy
  • Civil litigation with discovery experience to include document review, management, analysis and production, e-discovery programs and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Composes, reviews and prepares responses to formal discovery requests
  • Identify, locate, collect, organize, analyze, assess and manage documentary, statistical, computer and demonstrative evidence, including records and other information obtained from public and private sources for use in civil litigation
  • Assist in all phases of trial preparation which may include: Preparation of trial exhibits, trial notebooks, jury instructions, motions, briefs, witness interviews, scheduling, and communicating with the parties, court, hearing tribunals and witnesses
  • Interviewing client personnel to obtain facts
  • Composing affidavits and/or declarations as attachments to motions and briefs
  • Preparing witnesses, documentary evidence, electronic evidence, and demonstrative evidence for hearings and trials
  • Identifying, compiling, tracking, and providing evidence (testimonial and foundational) to experts
  • Organizing document production and/or document coding for use as possible evidence in complex litigation and assisting at hearings, trials, meditations, depositions, and settlement conferences
