About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking a part-time professional-track faculty position as a Lecturer in Philosophy. The successful candidate will teach three courses per academic year at the undergraduate level, specifically in Introduction to Philosophy and Philosophy of Mind. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include supporting undergraduate recruitment and outreach. This involves assisting with departmental advising, supporting the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and the Director of the future Human-Centered AI major in attending recruiting events. The department is looking for candidates who can contribute to the ARHU Strategic Plan's pillars: Transformative Thinking; Boundless Creativity; Expansive Empathy; and Meaningful Futures. Contributions may include leadership in teaching, mentoring, or service aimed at building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation for all individuals equitably and fairly. Lecturers teaching three or more courses annually are benefits-eligible. The posted salary range is for full-time employment, and part-time employees will receive a prorated salary.

Requirements

  • Masters in Philosophy by time of appointment.
  • Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching in Philosophy.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses in Introduction to Philosophy.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses in the Philosophy of Mind.
  • Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate philosophy pedagogy.
  • Ability and commitment to work with a diverse student population.
  • Ability and commitment to contribute to departmental advising, outreach, and recruitment.

Nice To Haves

  • PHD in Philosophy by the time of appointment.
  • Interest in taking an active role in undergraduate program development, recruitment, and outreach, especially in connection with the Philosophy major, the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major, and the BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
