About The Position

OrderYOYO is hiring a Lead Software Engineer to own the next stage of its payments platform’s evolution. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that combines growing and managing a team of payments engineers with setting technical direction for a business-critical domain. The role supports a more scalable operating model across online ordering and in-store platforms, including POS, kiosks, and payment terminals. The role leads the people, architecture, and delivery behind the payments platform, enabling KYC onboarding, deductions, settlement and payout timing, dispute flows, and merchant invoicing. It is accountable for raising reliability, security, and engineering quality while developing a high-performing team. The role spans payment authorization and settlement through disputes and merchant invoicing, working closely with Product, Legal/Compliance, Finance, Support, and Operations. The position is remote, with quarterly team gatherings at one of OrderYOYO’s global offices. OrderYOYO describes its culture as inclusive and ownership-oriented, with emphasis on personal development, learning, mentoring, and long-term growth.

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading, mentoring, or people-managing a team of software engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
  • Strong backend engineering background in distributed systems, including microservices, asynchronous processing, resilient APIs, and eventual consistency.
  • Production experience with payment flows such as authorization, capture, refunds, webhooks, and reconciliation, and with money-correctness patterns such as idempotency keys, double-entry thinking, and auditability.
  • A strong security mindset covering PCI compliance, PII protection, secrets management, least privilege, and secure coding practices.
  • Comfort working in an Azure-first environment, including APIs, queues/eventing, and monitoring, with strong CI/CD and automated testing practices.
  • Clear, confident communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders in high-stakes situations such as incidents, financial breaks, and compliance requests.
  • Sound judgment about when to move quickly, standardize, or defer with evidence, balancing team capacity, technical debt, and business priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience scaling or restructuring an engineering team during growth or organizational change.
  • Experience with sub-merchant, marketplace, or Payfac-like operating models, including KYC, underwriting, settlements, and fee deductions.
  • Familiarity with dispute tooling, card scheme rules, 3DS/risk rules, or fraud platforms.
  • Experience partnering with Legal, Compliance, or Finance leadership on regulatory or audit requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of payments engineers through technical guidance, regular feedback, and career development.
  • Own hiring and team-building for the payments engineering function, including defining role profiles and conducting interviews with recruiting.
  • Manage direct reports through one-to-ones, goal-setting, performance reviews, and career progression conversations.
  • Build a culture of documented and shared payments knowledge through design reviews, standards, and mentoring.
  • Represent the payments engineering team in leadership and cross-functional discussions, translating business needs into technical strategy and team priorities.
  • Balance hands-on technical contribution with people management, staying close to the codebase and unblocking the team.
  • Set technical direction and long-term architecture strategy for payment-domain services, including gateway integrations, payment intent, authorization, capture, refund flows, payout orchestration, and reconciliation.
  • Oversee marketplace capabilities, including onboarding and KYC integration, merchant configuration, settlement instructions, deductions, and invoicing and merchant-statement alignment.
  • Ensure robust flow-of-funds primitives, including idempotency, ledgers and events, and audit trails that Finance and Compliance can support.
  • Own the strategy for PSP and partner integrations, including tri-party and sub-merchant implications where applicable.
  • Oversee dispute, chargeback, and fraud-handling touchpoints across internal workflows and PSP tooling, and collaborate with Operations on runbooks and escalation paths.
  • Partner with Product, Legal/Compliance, Finance, and Support to turn requirements into safe, testable production behaviour.
  • Raise engineering quality through automated testing, safe rollouts and canaries, observability, and incident-response improvements, with accountability for team outcomes.
