Kalepa•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Kalepa is building professional-grade AI systems for insurers that can read, reason, decide, and act within real workflows. The company’s products are in production with leading insurers, and its broader goal is to build an AI operating system for decision-making across insurance. The Lead Product Designer will own complex, cross-cutting product-design problems and shape both what the platform builds and how it looks. Working closely with the current Lead Designer, product managers, and engineers, this person will bring polish, clarity, and structure to complex workflows and raise design quality across the team. The role reports to the Head of Product. The stated salary range is $190,000–$245,000 USD; final compensation depends on relevant experience, interview performance, and geographic location. The designer will lead work from discovery and research through delivery and iteration; translate ambiguous problems and new business areas into product direction; design data-dense workflows for underwriters; determine how AI communicates confidence and sources while keeping underwriters in control; establish scalable experience patterns across lines of business; use AI and rapid-prototyping tools to validate concepts; and strengthen team design practices through critique, mentorship, and shared standards.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience designing digital products for B2B, data-rich, or productivity-tool companies.
  • Experience working in a rapidly scaling, ownership-mentality startup environment.
  • Experience designing AI-driven tools.
  • Experience taking an existing platform and helping generalize and scale its user experience to support new and expanding workflows.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating the ability to simplify complexity, design thoughtful user interfaces, and apply clear interaction patterns.
  • Systems thinking, with experience shaping and contributing to design systems.
  • Strong visual-design skills and attention to detail, particularly in information hierarchy, interaction, and layout.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; proactive, responsive, and eager to receive feedback.
  • Curiosity and adaptability, with an interest in solving ambiguous problems and developing skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with MUI (Material UI) or similar design systems.
  • InsurTech, FinTech, or other highly regulated industry experience.
  • A technical background or interest in how things are built.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design for the platform’s most complex, cross-cutting problems, from discovery and research through delivery and iteration.
  • Turn ambiguous problems and new business areas into clear product direction, partnering with product, client success, and sales to balance user needs and business goals.
  • Design data-dense workflows that help underwriters find what matters and act on it with confidence.
  • Define how AI appears in the product, including how it communicates confidence, surfaces sources, and keeps underwriters in control of decisions.
  • Establish scalable patterns so the platform can grow across new lines of business without fragmenting the experience.
  • Use AI and rapid-prototyping tools to move quickly from idea to validated concept.
  • Raise the design bar across the team through critique, mentorship, and shared standards.
