UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, a nationally ranked pediatric hospital, is seeking a Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technician to join their Automated Testing Laboratory on a daylight shift. Requirements

  • Lead Medical Lab Technician: Three years' experience with certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Four years' experience without certification required.
  • Lead Medical Lab Scientist: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification, OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years' experience in the host laboratory preferred for Lead Medical Lab Technician.
  • Three years' experience as a Medical Lab Scientist strongly preferred.
  • ASCP or equivalent certification in Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) or categorical certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model, representing the Laboratory on Hospital committees, adhering to policies, and monitoring subordinate attendance and tardiness.
  • Act as a supervisor designate, assuming supervisory duties as needed, evaluating and solving problems in the absence of the Supervisor, and communicating issues to higher management.
  • Oversee laboratory operations including performing all duties of a Medical Lab Technician, ensuring instrument maintenance and function checks are performed and documented, troubleshooting instrument malfunctions, reviewing QC logs, compiling QA data, monitoring proficiency testing, and assisting with staff scheduling.
  • Manage purchasing and inventory by demonstrating awareness of appropriate inventory levels, taking action to prevent supply shortages or overages, and performing purchasing of supplies in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager.
  • Oversee training, development, and education by mastering new procedures, demonstrating awareness of changes, performing orientation and training assignments, serving as a resource to other employees, developing and evaluating special projects, performing test evaluations and validations, formulating and revising procedures, and preparing and delivering student lectures and bench instruction.
  • Assist supervisory personnel in the observation and documentation of laboratory staff competency and complete all assigned duties within the required time frame.
