About The Position

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic to oversee the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of a diverse fleet of construction equipment and heavy-duty vehicles. This role serves as the technical lead for both shop and field operations, ensuring equipment reliability, safety, and operational readiness for all crews. As the lead, this position requires strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to assign work effectively, set daily and long-term priorities, guide mechanics and helpers, and ensure timely completion of repairs. The Lead Mechanic also provides advanced troubleshooting on hydraulic, mechanical, diesel, pneumatic, and electrical systems. Equipment serviced includes (but is not limited to) excavators, skid steers, backhoes, loaders, dozers, dump trucks, trailers, compressors, pumps, and other specialized machinery used in construction operations. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with exceptional diagnostic abilities, excellent communication skills, and the capability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.

Requirements

  • 3–7 years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic in construction, industrial, or trucking environments.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, mechanical systems, and welding fundamentals.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to lift 50–75 lbs. and work in outdoor or shop environments.
  • Strong communication and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Technical school certification in diesel technology or heavy equipment repair is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic tests and repairs to identify, analyze, and resolve functionality issues on small construction equipment and tools (e.g., pumps, generators, air compressors, grinders, hammer drills, and similar equipment).
  • Conduct repairs with a focus on maximizing equipment reliability, safety, and overall performance.
  • Build, assemble, and configure machines or mechanical components according to company specifications and operational requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve reported equipment problems promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on machinery, tools, and mechanical systems to ensure optimal operation and extend equipment life.
  • Prepare, inspect, and set up new equipment for field deployment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in adherence with company safety guidelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the manager or supervisor.
