About The Position

Skilled and experienced Lead Mechanic to perform advanced mechanical work in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This position is responsible for preventive maintenance, troubleshooting complex systems, maintaining shop inventory and records, and supporting the safe and efficient operation of the City’s fleet.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Fleet maintenance and repair program operations
  • Automotive and heavy equipment repair methods, tools, and materials
  • Gasoline and diesel engine systems and components
  • Electrical, hydraulic, brake, fuel, ignition, steering, suspension, and transmission systems
  • Preventive maintenance and diagnostic procedures
  • Metal fabrication and welding techniques
  • Shop safety practices and occupational hazards
  • Recordkeeping practices
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Ability to: Diagnose and repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment
  • Operate tire mounting and balancing equipment
  • Use bi-directional scan tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Safely operate tools and testing equipment
  • Perform welding (gas and electric)
  • Conduct safety inspections and identify hazards
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Read and interpret repair manuals and schematics
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in automotive maintenance or a related field.
  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Must obtain at least four (4) ASE certifications within four (4) years of employment

Responsibilities

  • Maintain service and preventive maintenance schedules for the City’s vehicle fleet and equipment.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, including light- and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, and adjust vehicle systems including fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, fuel management, transmission, steering, suspension, and engine sensors.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
  • Install decals, unit numbers, push bars, and light bars on Police vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems including ignition systems, alternators, starters, and batteries.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of parts and supplies to ensure fleet readiness.
  • Maintain accurate service, repair, and inventory records.
  • Obtain a minimum of four (4) ASE certifications within four (4) years of employment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
