About The Position

The Lead Fleet Mechanic performs advanced preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and mechanical and electrical repairs on diesel and gasoline vehicles in accordance with Pafford Fleet Policies and Procedures. This role involves assisting the Mechanic Director with daily shop priorities and workflow coordination, providing technical guidance and training to other mechanics, and reviewing completed repairs to ensure quality and safety. The Lead Fleet Mechanic also performs vehicle inspections, responds to breakdowns, diagnoses and repairs a wide range of vehicle issues including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, brakes, suspension, and drivetrain. They assist in implementing fleet maintenance procedures, accurately document all repair and maintenance activities, and help maintain parts and material records. Communication with the Mechanic Director and Operations leadership regarding vehicle status and repair needs is crucial. The role also includes maintaining a clean and safe work environment, operating company vehicles safely, and attending mandatory training. This position demonstrates professional conduct, accountability, and leadership within the maintenance team, ensuring vehicles are repaired efficiently and downtime is minimized.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of verifiable experience as an automotive, diesel, or fleet mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of automotive and diesel repair, diagnostics, electrical systems, HVAC, braking systems, and drivetrain components.
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license.
  • Must have a complete set of personal tools.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adapt to changing operational needs.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, repair documents, and maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and confidentiality regarding company matters.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Regular and predictable attendance required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in various positions for extended periods while performing vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment, and vehicle parts weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, noise, vehicle fluids, and outdoor weather.
  • Ability to perform work under vehicles and in confined spaces as required.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety procedures.
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with emergency vehicles, ambulances, or commercial fleet maintenance preferred.
  • Previous lead mechanic or mentoring experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced preventive maintenance, diagnostics, mechanical repairs, and electrical repairs on diesel and gasoline vehicles.
  • Assist the Mechanic Director with daily shop priorities and workflow coordination.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and assistance to mechanics regarding vehicle repairs, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures.
  • Review completed repairs to ensure work is performed safely, accurately, and according to company standards.
  • Perform inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and road calls when requested.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, HVAC, brake, suspension, drivetrain, and other vehicle-related issues.
  • Assist mechanics with complex repairs and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Assist with implementation of fleet maintenance procedures and programs established by the Mechanic Director.
  • Complete all required vehicle repair and maintenance documentation accurately, neatly, and timely, including labor hours, parts, and materials used.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate parts and material records.
  • Communicate vehicle status, repair concerns, and maintenance needs to the Mechanic Director and Operations leadership.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Operate company vehicles in accordance with company policy and safe driving practices.
  • Attend all mandatory training and meetings.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Mechanic Director or Operations Manager.
