Lead Engineer - Material Mechanics and Durability

GE Aerospace•Elgin Township, IL
•$80,000 - $150,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Lead Engineer in GE Aerospace Research’s Material Mechanics and Durability organization develops understanding of novel materials and material systems. The role conducts and coordinates experiments to investigate fundamental material behavior and translates the results into constitutive models and failure criteria. It contributes to state-of-the-art life prediction methods and tools for fatigue, creep, and fracture of advanced material systems, and supports critical field issues through analysis and testing. The position works with internal customers and Aerospace Research and design colleagues on testing, modeling, stress analysis, and lifing methods. It also serves as a technical resource for urgent, high-risk issues; develops technology roadmaps in computational and experimental mechanics; participates in government grant responses; and communicates technical findings through presentations, reports, and publications. The role is based in an office/lab in Niskayuna, New York, and requires access to U.S. export-controlled information.

Requirements

  • PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, or an MS in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States; employment visas will not be sponsored now or in the future.
  • Willingness to work out of an office/lab in Niskayuna, New York.
  • Ability to meet the U.S. Person status requirement for access to U.S. export-controlled information: U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. citizen, or granted asylee or refugee status.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep expertise in engineering mechanics and fracture mechanics, with familiarity and experience using finite element analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with phase field methods applied to structural mechanics problems.
  • Experience designing and executing experimental test techniques for nickel-based superalloys and ceramic matrix composite materials.
  • Familiarity with high-temperature experimental techniques, data acquisition systems, digital image correlation, acoustic emission techniques, and infrared camera thermal measurements.
  • In-depth knowledge of MTS and Instron test systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical testing of aerospace materials, including ceramic matrix composites, nickel-based superalloys, ceramic coatings, and polymer matrix composites.
  • Develop material constitutive models and implement them in numerical tools such as ANSYS.
  • Develop failure criteria specific to material systems and failure modes.
  • Work with internal customers to develop test plans, execute testing, and maintain clear communication throughout the process.
  • Collaborate with Aerospace Research colleagues to identify and resolve technical challenges in high-temperature material testing and constitutive modeling.
  • Collaborate across Aerospace design communities to develop component models, stress analysis, and lifing methods for ceramic matrix composites, barrier coatings, and superalloys.
  • Serve as a technical resource to resolve key, short-term, high-risk technical issues in technical focus areas.
  • Develop and own technology roadmaps for focus areas in computational and experimental mechanics.
  • Participate in responding to government grants.
  • Deliver presentations, reports, and publications to engineering staff, GE Aerospace, and external agencies.
  • Guide the team in explaining outliers, debugging issues, and refining plans.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Access to a Health Coach and the Employee Assistance Program.
  • GE Aerospace Retirement Savings Plan, including a 401(k) savings plan with company matching and company retirement contributions.
  • Access to Fidelity resources and planning consultants.
  • Tuition assistance.
  • Adoption assistance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Paid time off for vacation or illness.
