Lead Engineer - Thermal Dynamics

GE Vernova•Greenville, SC
•$89,300 - $148,700

About The Position

The Lead Engineer in the Aero-Thermal & Clearances Design (ATCD) team executes thermal design and analysis for turbomachinery hardware and architectures across GE Vernova’s gas power portfolio. The work supports the full product life cycle, including New Product Introduction (NPI), New Technology Introduction (NTI), testing and validation, and fielded-product support. The role calls for technical expertise in heat transfer, secondary flow systems, and thermal analysis, along with sound analytical judgment and the ability to own work from concept through design review and final documentation with minimal oversight. The successful candidate works with global, cross-functional teams to deliver timely, accurate, high-quality outcomes. They contribute to continuous improvement through Lean principles, innovation, and advanced analytical methods. The role is restricted to U.S. persons because of access to export-controlled technology, and requires up to 10% travel within the U.S.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable engineering field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or thermal analysis and design for turbomachinery or comparable applications.
  • U.S. person status as defined under the Immigration and Nationality Act, due to access to export-controlled technology; proof of status is required before employment.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% within the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years of additional relevant experience or an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable field, specializing in Thermal Science, Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Heat Transfer, or a related area, with a strong academic record.
  • Experience in thermal design and analysis of turbomachinery components, including heat transfer and secondary-flow systems.
  • Experience with ANSYS Thermal, HyperWorks, CFX, ICEM CFD, or equivalent analysis platforms.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project-execution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical conclusions and recommendations clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively in a global matrix organization with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Strong customer and product mindset focused on quality, operability, and timely execution.
  • Ownership and accountability in achieving goals.
  • Experience developing engineering automation and analysis solutions using programming or scripting languages such as Python, Fortran, Visual Basic, or Java.
  • Ability to evaluate and select AI/ML strategies for long-term design-system improvement.
  • Experience applying Lean tools to identify, evaluate, and implement innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform heat-transfer, secondary-flow, CFD, thermal-analysis, and design activities for flange-to-flange stationary and rotating components across gas and steam turbine products, following engineering principles, standards, design practices, procedures, and product requirements.
  • Develop expertise in turbomachinery thermal design and independently resolve design and analysis challenges using sound technical judgment.
  • Execute design and analysis across conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases for NPI, NTI, and product-support programs, building autonomy and ownership with minimal oversight.
  • Build, assess, and improve thermal-analysis models; interpret results; and prepare design-review materials with clear conclusions, rationale, and actionable recommendations.
  • Evaluate design trade-offs, identify risks, and propose solutions beyond established methods and parameters when appropriate.
  • Contribute to design improvements, technical problem-solving, and root-cause analysis related to thermal performance, heat transfer, and secondary-flow systems.
  • Identify and evaluate design-to-cost opportunities across engine hardware, considering performance, durability, and manufacturing costs with Mechanical, Services, and Systems Engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with global mechanical, aerodynamic, performance, and clearance engineering teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Improve thermal-design practices and analysis methods, including use of probabilistic methods, digital tools, automation, and AI/ML techniques where relevant.
  • Apply Lean principles, improve standard work, and contribute to engineering templates, best practices, and process improvements that reduce rework and improve quality.
  • Document technical data, analysis outputs, assumptions, and conclusions using engineering templates and established practices; maintain complete, accurate, and traceable project documentation and model management.
