Engineer - Thermal Dynamics

GE Vernova•Greenville, SC
•$80,000 - $120,000

About The Position

As an Engineer – Thermal Dynamics in the Aero-Thermal & Clearances Design (ATCD) team, you will execute thermal design and analysis activities for turbomachinery hardware and architectures in GE Vernova’s gas power portfolio. The role supports the full product life cycle, including New Product Introduction (NPI), New Technology Introduction (NTI), testing and validation, and fielded product support. It requires technical understanding of heat transfer, secondary flow systems, and thermal analysis, along with analytical judgment and the ability to work from concept through design review and final documentation under technical leader guidance. You will collaborate with global, cross-functional teams to deliver timely, accurate, high-quality outcomes. Work includes thermal design and analysis for gas and steam turbine components across conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases, model development and assessment, technical documentation, design improvement, and product support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable engineering field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or thermal analysis and design for turbomachinery or comparable applications.
  • Must be a U.S. person (including a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual) because the role uses technical data subject to U.S. government export control restrictions; proof of status is required before employment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Any offer is conditioned on successful completion of a drug screen, as applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable engineering field, specializing in Thermal Science, Thermal and Fluid Engineering, or Heat Transfer analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in thermal design and analysis of turbomachinery components, including heat transfer and secondary flow systems.
  • Experience with ANSYS Thermal, HyperWorks, CFX, ICEM CFD, or equivalent engineering analysis platforms.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project execution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical conclusions and recommendations clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively in a global matrix organization with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Strong customer and product mindset, focused on quality, operability, and timely execution.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages such as Python, Fortran, Visual Basic, or Java for engineering automation and analysis efficiency.
  • Demonstrated learning and use of AI/ML tools and methods to improve design systems.
  • Interest in innovation, continuous improvement, and Lean practices.
  • Ability to obtain U.S. Government authorization for access to export-controlled information, if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform heat transfer, secondary flow, CFD, thermal analysis, and design activities for stationary and rotating gas turbine and steam turbine components, following engineering principles, business standards, design practices, procedures, and product requirements.
  • Develop technical expertise in turbomachinery thermal design and apply it to design and analysis challenges.
  • Support conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design work for NPI, NTI, and product support programs, developing greater autonomy and ownership.
  • Build, assess, and improve thermal analysis models; interpret results; and prepare design review materials with conclusions, technical rationale, and recommendations.
  • Evaluate design trade-offs, identify risks, and propose solutions using sound engineering judgment.
  • Contribute to design improvements, technical problem-solving, and root cause analysis related to thermal performance, heat transfer, and secondary flow systems.
  • Support design-to-cost opportunities for engine hardware, balancing performance, durability, and manufacturing cost with Mechanical, Services, and Systems Engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with global mechanical, aerodynamic, performance, and clearance engineering teams to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Use innovative thermal design practices and analysis methods, including probabilistic methods, digital tools, automation, and AI/ML where relevant.
  • Apply Lean principles, improve standard work, and contribute to templates, best practices, and process improvements that reduce rework and improve quality.
  • Document technical data, analysis outputs, assumptions, and conclusions in accordance with established design templates and practices, ensuring complete, accurate, traceable documentation and model management.
