About The Position

Under general supervision of the Supervising Electrician, performs advanced journey-level electrical work and provides lead direction to electricians and assigned personnel engaged in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of campus electrical systems and infrastructure. Assists in coordinating daily operations, projects, preventive maintenance activities, and emergency response efforts.

Requirements

Knowledge of National and California Electrical Codes.
Ability to read, interpret and work from plans and drawings.
General knowledge of electrical tools and safety practices.
General knowledge of electrical installation and maintenance.
Ability to direct work of unskilled helpers.
Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic functions.
Physical strength to perform work assignments that required lifting/carrying (50lbs. without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with assistance), standing, climbing, crawling, and walking required.
Ability to learn and use a sophisticated computerized work system at a level commmensurable with the position.
Solid work history with emphasis on personal integrity.
Follows all University and departments policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
Maintains a safe work environment.
Communicates with the University community in civil manner.
Knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements, Lockout/Tagout procedures, arc flash hazards, and electrical safe work practices.
Ability to utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), preferably Planon, to document labor, materials, preventive maintenance activities, and work order completion.
Working knowledge of medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, transformers, switchgear, and related infrastructure.
Ability to provide lead work direction, technical instruction, mentoring, and on-the-job training to electricians and apprentices.
Ability to communicate effectively with campus customers, contractors, and university personnel while maintaining a high level of customer service.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.

Valid California driver’s license required.

Nice To Haves

Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program or equivalent training and experience preferred.
Four or more years of journey-level electrical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Provides lead work direction and technical guidance to electricians and assigned personnel.
Assists with planning, coordinating, prioritizing, and monitoring electrical maintenance, repair, testing, and construction projects.
Coordinates daily work assignments and ensures completion of assigned work orders and preventive maintenance activities.
Instructs and leads skilled, assigned personnel as required.
Uses knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment of the trade in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, following building codes and safety orders in daily performance of duties.
Ensures work is performed in accordance with National Electrical Code (NEC), California Electrical Code, NFPA 70E requirements, campus standards, and applicable safety regulations.
Provides technical training and guidance to electricians and apprentices.
Performs advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, testing, installation, and repair of electrical distribution systems, transformers, switchgear, lighting systems, motor controls, emergency power systems, and related electrical equipment.
Assists with medium-voltage electrical system maintenance and switching activities as assigned.
