Job Summary Under general supervision of the Director FM, the Supervising Electrician is responsible for the day to day supervision and performance of a crew of journey level electricians and other assigned personnel in all places of operations of the campus electric shops.

Requirements

Equivalent to a high school diploma and two or more years of experience as a journey-level electrician, including one to two years in a lead or supervisory capacity required.
Valid California driver's license required.
Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
Strong supervisory experience with a proven ability to instruct, coordinate, and oversee the work of a minimum six-person electrician crew while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professional development.
Comprehensive knowledge of the California Electrical Safety Orders, National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E standards, Lockout/Tagout procedures, arc flash requirements, and other applicable electrical safety regulations.
Experience leading, mentoring, training, evaluating, and developing journey-level electricians and apprentices is essential.
Ability to maintain a safe work environment, ensure compliance with all University and departmental policies, and communicate with the campus community in a professional, civil, and respectful manner.
Strong technical and organizational expertise, including the ability to design electrical systems, prepare cost estimates, develop material lists, and maintain accurate and efficient record-keeping systems.
Experience managing medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, including substations, transformers, switchgear, protective relays, and switching procedures, preferably within a university or large institutional environment.
Proficiency in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), ideally Planon, is highly desirable for work management, preventive maintenance, and reporting.
Excels at coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing assignments, managing resources effectively, preparing reports, communicating technical information clearly, and building positive working relationships with campus stakeholders, service recipients, and external contractors.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Nice To Haves

Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program or equivalent training and experience preferred.
Five years of progressively responsible journey-level electrical experience, including experience supervising electrical personnel preferred.
Experience with medium-voltage electrical distribution systems is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Supervises and schedules the work of crews operating and maintaining and repairing building electrical equipment throughout the campus.
From service order, or according to preventative maintenance schedule, determines, the necessary materials, supplies and equipment and prepares list from which they are purchased; develop preliminary funding obligations by estimating labor and material costs; lay out and assigns work to crafts workers and helpers; explains safety procedures and-devices and assures their proper use; and inspects finish work for quality and conformity to specifications.
Provides assistance and input to making complex estimates for repair or replacement work estimates for smaller work as required.
Oversees and ensures accurate documentation of labor, materials, preventive maintenance activities, and work order completion within the University's computerized maintenance management system (Planon).
Supervises maintenance, testing, switching, and repair activities associated with campus medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, substations, transformers, switchgear, protective devices, and related infrastructure.
Provides electrical expertise and technical guidance regarding campus electrical infrastructure, energy conservation initiatives, electrical system upgrades, medium-voltage distribution systems, and construction or renovation projects.
Participates in planning and coordination of electrical shutdowns and campus utility outages.
Administers and enforces electrical safety programs including NFPA 70E requirements, Lockout/Tagout procedures, arc flash safety practices, personal protective equipment compliance, hazard assessments, and applicable building and electrical codes.
Provides safety leadership, training, and oversight for assigned personnel.
