About The Position

The Lead Electrical Systems Engineer provides technical leadership for electrical engineering activities supporting customized data center cooling equipment, including Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAH) and Fan Coil Wall systems. The role guides and mentors electrical and mechanical engineers and designers, reviews engineering work, supports technical decisions, and reinforces engineering best practices and continuous improvement. The engineer leads electrical work throughout the Engineer-to-Order (ETO) lifecycle, from customer bid support and technical submittals through design execution, manufacturing release, and field support. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing customer-specific electrical designs and associated engineering deliverables, and coordinating technical activities to ensure customer requirements become accurate, manufacturable production documentation. The position works closely with manufacturing, quality, laboratory, validation, operations, and product management teams. It supports production transitions, equipment testing, quality and field issue investigations, and improvements to design, manufacturing processes, cost, and performance. The role is based in Lexington, Kentucky, with an onsite Monday–Thursday and remote Friday hybrid arrangement subject to business needs, and requires up to 10–15% annual travel.

Requirements

  • 7–10 years of product design engineering experience; experienced senior engineers with additional relevant expertise are also encouraged to apply.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program is strongly preferred; a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering may be considered for candidates with applicable systems engineering experience.
  • Strong foundation in electrical engineering fundamentals, including circuit analysis, electrical design principles, mathematics, and physics.
  • Demonstrated experience designing electrical systems or components for manufactured equipment, industrial products, or complex engineered systems.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, reviewing designs, and guiding engineering decisions.
  • Experience leading engineering projects through a Product Development Process (PDP) or equivalent phase-gate methodology.
  • Experience collaborating with manufacturing teams to transition engineering designs into production-ready products.
  • Ability to evaluate complex technical challenges, prioritize critical issues, and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong understanding of engineering documentation, design reviews, quality expectations, and cross-functional project execution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Results-oriented approach focused on engineering quality, team development, and successful project delivery.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10–15% annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing or supporting commercial HVAC equipment, air handling units, CRAH/CRAC systems, or data center cooling technologies.
  • Experience in an Engineer-to-Order (ETO), Configure-to-Order (CTO), or customized equipment manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with UL standards and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Knowledge of electrical load calculations, current calculations, and electrical system performance requirements.
  • Experience designing electrical equipment for industrial machinery, appliances, cooling systems, or other manufactured products.
  • Experience developing and reviewing BOMs, engineering submittals, electrical drawings, and manufacturing release documentation.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM), engineering change management, and product quality improvement.
  • Experience supporting product validation, testing, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes.
  • Ability to mentor multidisciplinary engineering teams and provide electrical engineering guidance to engineers from mechanical or other technical backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to a multidisciplinary team of electrical and mechanical engineers and designers supporting customized data center cooling equipment.
  • Mentor and develop engineers in electrical design principles, engineering standards, technical calculations, and structured problem-solving.
  • Review electrical engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, design quality, compliance with applicable requirements, and manufacturing readiness.
  • Help engineers from other technical disciplines understand and apply electrical engineering principles to equipment design and execution.
  • Establish and reinforce engineering best practices, standardized workflows, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a technical resource for complex engineering challenges, design decisions, and cross-functional problem resolution.
  • Lead electrical engineering activities throughout the ETO lifecycle, from customer bid support and technical submittals through design execution, manufacturing release, and field support.
  • Develop and review electrical design content for customer-specific equipment configurations and engineered cooling systems.
  • Oversee the preparation and accuracy of bills of materials, drawings, product specifications, design models, and technical documentation.
  • Evaluate electrical design requirements, equipment configurations, and product performance considerations to support safe, reliable, manufacturable solutions.
  • Coordinate engineering activities to translate customer requirements into complete and accurate manufacturing deliverables.
  • Apply Product Development Process (PDP) or equivalent phase-gate methodologies to support design quality and project execution.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering teams to align electrical designs with production capabilities, assembly requirements, and Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Support engineering-to-manufacturing transitions by resolving design questions, reviewing documentation, and addressing production challenges.
  • Collaborate with laboratory and validation teams on equipment testing, customer witness testing, and verification of electrical system performance.
  • Investigate product quality, reliability, and field issues through root cause analysis and corrective action initiatives.
