Lead Data Governance Analyst

Marathon Petroleum Corporation•Findlay, OH

About The Position

Marathon Petroleum's Digital organization is seeking a Lead Data Governance Analyst to advance data governance and data product enablement across related business domains for the Middle Office function and Order to Cash global process. As part of Enterprise Data Governance, the role partners with Global Process Owners, Domain Owners, Data Product Owners, business Data Stewards, and Digital partners to establish sustainable governance capabilities while preserving business ownership and decision rights. The analyst develops deep knowledge of business processes, data, systems, authoritative sources, and dependencies, and applies that knowledge to solve business problems and support valuable, high-quality data products. The role stands up and sustains the data governance operating model across assigned domains. It coaches stakeholders, supports change enablement, assesses domain maturity, and contributes to enterprise governance accelerators, templates, and training. It gathers customer feedback on workflows and platform capabilities, translates domain policy and compliance needs into platform-control requirements, and works with control owners and technical partners to assess control design and effectiveness, address gaps, and support audit discussions using clear ownership and evidence. The role does not configure controls or replace independent assurance. The position is based in Findlay, Ohio, with additional locations in Houston and San Antonio, Texas. Marathon Petroleum offers a total rewards program that includes health, vision, and dental insurance, paid time off, 401(k) matching, paid parental leave, educational reimbursement, and eligibility for a discretionary annual company-sponsored bonus.

  • Use SQL, profiling, grain/key/join analysis, business-rule validation, and reconciliation to investigate data and answer substantive questions with evidence and stated limitations.

  • Assess domain maturity, develop improvement roadmaps, sustain stakeholder relationships and coaching, track actions and outcomes, and provide portfolio visibility through forums and enterprise reporting.
  • Share governance policies and roles; facilitate domain-charter input; clarify scope and decision rights; and establish practical forums, records, and escalation routines.
  • Build independent business Data Steward capability without taking on routine stewardship or Domain Owner approval rights.
  • Demonstrate how domain personas use the data catalog and equip business stewards to train data consumers.
  • Consult with process, domain, and product owners on business problems, reusable data-product opportunities, requirements, expected value, and roadmap options.
  • Identify opportunities to reuse existing data products before proposing new development and support certification readiness.
  • Explain MPC's data strategy and high-level architecture in business and technical language, and translate domain needs into data, platform, governance, and data-product capabilities.
  • Develop walkthroughs and train-the-trainer coaching so business Data Stewards can lead ongoing consumer enablement and data literacy.
  • Maintain customer-facing relationships, gather feedback on training materials, templates, accelerators, AI-enabled governance workflows, and platform usability, and work with delivery partners to make improvements and close the feedback loop.
  • Map applicable enterprise and domain policy requirements, including regulated and restricted-data requirements, to platform controls; confirm design, implementation, and operating effectiveness with control owners using evidence; and drive remediation or escalation of gaps.
  • Contribute to Enterprise Data Governance accelerators, templates, and training materials.
  • The posting also lists broad leadership responsibilities: set the data governance vision; collaborate with strategic departments; serve as a primary contact for regulatory bodies and external auditors; address complex governance challenges; advocate for governance at the executive level; lead maturity models and roadmaps; develop external strategic partnerships; oversee budgeting and resource allocation; establish KPIs; and lead crisis management for data breaches or non-compliance.
