About The Position

The City of San Bernardino is seeking a dependable and experienced Lead Custodian to support the cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of City facilities. Under general supervision, the Lead Custodian leads and participates in the work of assigned custodial crews responsible for cleaning and maintaining City buildings and facilities. This position performs advanced custodial tasks, assists with training staff, and helps ensure that facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, and professional condition. This position is assigned to the Police Department. Qualified candidates must successfully complete a police background investigation as part of the pre-employment examinations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of practices of employee lead supervision, including assignment scheduling, training, work evaluation, safe work methods and safety practices pertaining to the work.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance or a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of proper mixing and dilution of cleansers, disinfectants, and stripping agents.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Skill in planning, estimating, coordinating, and scheduling the work of a custodial staff.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining a variety of basic written records and reports.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining tools and equipment used in the field.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
  • Skill in identifying, designing, and implementing effective courses of action.
  • Skill in calculating basic math problems.
  • Skill in understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in providing customer service.
  • Must successfully complete a police background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and participates in the work of assigned custodial crews responsible for cleaning and maintaining City buildings and facilities.

  • Reviews the cleaning schedule and coordinating assignments for the custodial crew.
  • Ensures priority areas such as offices, restrooms, and public spaces are cleaned and ready for daily operations.
  • Performs custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and floor care.
  • Monitors work quality and providing guidance to staff.
  • Trains employees on proper cleaning procedures, equipment use, and safety practices.
  • Helps maintain timesheets.
  • Monitors supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with preparing facilities for meetings or special events.
  • Ensures City facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming for staff and the public.
