About The Position

The Police Officer serves as a sworn law enforcement professional within the Health & Hospital Police Department and is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing applicable laws and regulations, and maintaining a safe and secure environment across healthcare and hospital facilities. Operating under the supervision of a Sergeant of Police, the Police Officer performs patrol, response, enforcement, and investigative duties in support of patient safety, employee protection, and continuity of healthcare operations. The Police Officer exercises full police authority within the assigned jurisdiction and performs duties in a manner consistent with applicable Indiana law, departmental policy, healthcare regulations, and professional law enforcement standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy or ability to complete required training within accordance to IC 16-18-4-4.
  • Ability to meet and maintain all physical, medical, and psychological standards for sworn officers.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Certification as a sworn law enforcement officer in the State of Indiana or eligibility for certification.
  • Knowledge of criminal law, patrol procedures, and law enforcement practices.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making under stress.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in healthcare and institutional environments.
  • Proficiency in report writing and use of law enforcement technology systems.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols Health & Hospital facilities, campuses, and properties by foot, vehicle, or other authorized means.
  • Responds to calls for service, alarms, disturbances, medical emergencies, and criminal incidents.
  • Enforces Indiana law, local ordinances, and applicable institutional regulations within jurisdiction.
  • Conducts traffic enforcement and parking control as authorized.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of criminal and non-criminal incidents, including interviewing involved parties and witnesses.
  • Collects, preserves, and documents evidence in accordance with law and departmental procedures.
  • Prepares accurate and timely incident reports, arrest reports, citations, and related documentation.
  • Makes lawful arrests and takes individuals into custody when appropriate.
  • Uses force only as necessary and in accordance with departmental policy and legal standards.
  • Transports prisoners, safeguards detainees, and ensures proper processing and documentation.
  • Interacts professionally with patients, visitors, employees, and medical staff in sensitive and high-stress environments.
  • Supports de-escalation, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed policing practices.
  • Assists hospital staff with safety planning, incident prevention, and security awareness.
  • Prepares cases for prosecution and provides testimony in court, administrative hearings, and other proceedings.
  • Complies with training requirements, policy updates, and performance standards.
  • The Police Officer is vested with full law enforcement authority within assigned jurisdiction and is accountable for lawful conduct, ethical performance, and adherence to departmental policy.
  • The Police Officer operates within the established chain of command and follows lawful orders issued by supervisory and command staff.
