Lead CNC Programmer - VTL

GE Vernova•Greenville, SC
•$81,700 - $136,700

About The Position

As a member of the CAD/CAM team, the Lead CNC Programmer contributes to factory volume ramp and standardization efforts. The role designs, optimizes, validates, and supports CNC programs and machining processes for complex, large-format equipment and high-temperature superalloys. It works with Manufacturing Engineers and shop-floor teams to integrate new equipment, establish machining standards, prove out first-piece components, troubleshoot production, and train operators. The role uses Siemens NX and other CAD/CAM software, alongside digital-twin and verification tools such as Vericut and Siemens Run My Virtual Machine. The equipment and processes include large VTLs and VBMs up to 2.5 meters, five-axis mills, multi-purpose turn/grind machines, EDM, probing, closed-loop machining, and related tooling and fixturing. The position also leads process-improvement projects and provides day-to-day CNC support in a fast-paced, matrixed environment. Access to U.S. export-controlled information is required; any applicable offer is contingent on obtaining U.S. Government authorization. Employment is conditioned on legal authorization to work in the United States and successful completion of a drug screen, as applicable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, or graduation from a machinist apprenticeship or similar program, plus 3 years of experience with graphical-based CAM-system CNC programming; alternatively, a high school degree plus 6 years of such experience.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, with above-average shop math skills in geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to interpret drawing requirements.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • For access to U.S. export-controlled information, ability to obtain U.S. Government authorization where applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience creating five-axis CNC programs using a CAM system, preferably NX.
  • At least 1 year of experience with high-level machine tool controls, including subroutines/macros, Renishaw probing routines, variable-based programming, and closed-loop machining.
  • Significant hands-on machinist experience and ability to personally set up and prove out complex first-piece programs.
  • Experience managing tight tolerances on large-format equipment such as VTLs and VBMs up to 2.5 meters, including challenges related to part deflection, work hardening, and thermal stability.
  • Extensive experience machining nickel-based superalloys such as Inconel, Rene, or Hastelloy, particularly for Heavy Duty Gas Turbine or aerospace components.
  • Experience with Vericut or other CNC verification or machine-simulation software.
  • Strong familiarity with multiple machine controls, including Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, and Siemens.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize high-efficiency CNC programs for complex multi-axis setups machining high-temperature superalloys.
  • Use digital-twin software, including Vericut, to validate CNC code and optimize toolpaths before production.
  • Develop adaptive probing routines, macro programming, and closed-loop machining processes.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineers and shop-floor teams to commission new machine tools and establish baseline machining standards.
  • Provide technical mentoring, troubleshoot setups, prove out first-piece components, and share knowledge across the team.
  • Support large VTLs, VBMs, five-axis mills, and multi-purpose turn/grind machines up to 2.5 meters.
  • Generate and maintain CNC programs using NX-CAM or other software for multi-axis milling, turning, grinding, and/or EDM.
  • Create programs that follow standards and qualified machining parameters.
  • Provide CNC support to Manufacturing Engineers and train operators during new or rebuilt machine startup and process improvements.
  • Provide daily CNC programming and troubleshooting support to shop-floor operators.
  • Support and implement tooling and fixturing requirements for CNC machine tools.
  • Generate and support workstation instructions (methods) for CNC-related issues.
  • Initiate and lead process-improvement projects to improve safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with appropriate team members.
  • Work independently and within a team-based, matrixed organization, contributing to positive change in a fast-paced environment.
