Lead CNC Programmer - VTL

GE Vernova•Greenville, SC
•$81,700 - $136,700

About The Position

As a member of the CAD/CAM team, the Lead CNC Programmer contributes to factory volume ramp and standardization efforts. The role designs and optimizes high-efficiency CNC programs for complex multi-axis setups machining high-temperature superalloys, and uses digital-twin software to validate programs and optimize toolpaths before production. The position develops adaptive probing routines, macro programming, and closed-loop machining processes; supports integration and commissioning of new machine tools; and partners with manufacturing engineers and shop-floor teams on troubleshooting, first-piece prove-outs, training, and process improvement. The role supports large VTLs, VMBs, 5-axis mills, and multi-purpose turn/grind machines up to 2.5 meters. It generates and maintains CNC programs using NX-CAM or other software for operations such as multi-axis milling, turning, grinding, and EDM; creates programs to established standards and qualified machining parameters; supports tooling, fixturing, workstation instructions, and daily shop-floor needs; and leads improvement projects focused on safety, quality, cost, and delivery. The work calls for effective communication, collaboration in a matrixed organization, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while supporting positive change. The position offers access to Siemens NX, Vericut, Siemens Run My Virtual Machine, large-format and custom machine tools, Renishaw probing routines, Caron Engineering TMaC, and modal-analysis equipment. GE Vernova describes a professional development-oriented work environment with challenging careers and competitive compensation. Relocation assistance is provided. U.S.-based compensation is listed as $81,700 to $136,700, subject to geographic differentials and candidate factors, with eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus. The posting states that access to U.S. export-controlled information may be required, and any offer is contingent on eligibility for authorization when applicable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, or graduation from a machinist apprenticeship or similar program, plus 3 years of experience with graphical-based CAM-system CNC programming; alternatively, a high school degree plus 6 years of such experience.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, with above-average shop math skills in geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to interpret drawing requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information; if applicable, an offer is contingent on authorization to access that information from the U.S. Government.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; offers are conditioned on successful completion of a drug screen, as applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience creating 5-axis CNC programs using a CAM system, preferably NX.
  • At least 1 year of experience with high-level machine tool controls, including subroutine/macro programming, Renishaw probing routines, variable-based programming, and closed-loop machining.
  • Hands-on machinist background and ability to personally set up and prove out complex first-piece programs.
  • Experience managing tight tolerances on large-format equipment such as VTLs and VBMs up to 2.5 meters, accounting for part deflection, work hardening, and thermal stability.
  • Extensive experience machining nickel-based superalloys such as Inconel, Rene, and Hastelloy, particularly for heavy-duty gas turbine or aerospace applications.
  • Experience using Vericut or other CNC verification or machine-simulation software.
  • Strong familiarity with multiple machine controls, including Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, and Siemens.

  • Partner with manufacturing engineers and shop-floor teams to commission new machine tools and establish baseline machining standards.
  • Troubleshoot setups, prove out first-piece components, and share technical knowledge with the team.
  • Support large VTLs, VMBs, 5-axis mills, and multi-purpose turn/grind machines up to 2.5 meters.
  • Generate and maintain CNC programs using NX-CAM or other software for milling, turning, grinding, and/or EDM.
  • Create programs according to standards and qualified machining parameters.
  • Provide CNC support to manufacturing engineers and train operators during new or rebuilt machine startups and process improvements.
  • Provide daily CNC programming and troubleshooting support to shop-floor operators.
  • Support and implement tooling and fixturing requirements for CNC machine tools.
  • Generate and support workstation instructions for CNC-related issues.
  • Initiate and lead process improvement projects to improve safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with appropriate team members and work effectively both independently and in a matrixed team environment.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment and support positive change.
