Lead CNC Programmer - VTL

GE Vernova•Greenville, NC

About The Position

As a member of the CAD/CAM team, the Lead CNC Programmer contributes to factory volume ramp and standardization efforts. The role designs and optimizes CNC programs for complex multi-axis machining of high-temperature superalloys and uses digital-twin software to validate programs and toolpaths before production. It supports large VTLs, VBMs, 5-axis mills, and multi-purpose turn/grind machines up to 2.5 meters, as well as milling, turning, grinding, and EDM processes. The position develops adaptive probing routines, macro programming, and closed-loop machining processes; helps commission new machine tools and establish machining standards; and provides hands-on technical support, troubleshooting, first-piece prove-out, and operator training. It also supports tooling, fixturing, workstation instructions, and process improvements, working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed organization. The position requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Where applicable, final offers depend on the ability to obtain U.S. Government authorization for access. GE Vernova states that employment is limited to people legally authorized to work in the United States and that offers are conditioned on successful completion of a drug screen, as applicable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or graduation from a machinist apprenticeship (or similar), plus 3 years of graphical-based CAM system CNC programming experience; alternatively, a high school degree with 6 years of graphical-based CAM system CNC programming experience.
  • Ability to interpret drawing requirements.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • The role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information; applicable candidates must be able to obtain U.S. Government authorization for access.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Offer is conditioned on successful completion of a drug screen, as applicable.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience creating 5-axis CNC programs using a CAM system, preferably NX.
  • At least 1 year of experience with high-level machine-tool controls, including subroutine/macro programming, Renishaw probing routines, variable-based programming, and closed-loop machining.
  • Hands-on machinist background and ability to set up and prove out complex first-piece programs.
  • Experience managing tight tolerances on large-format equipment such as VTLs and VBMs up to 2.5 meters, including consideration of part deflection, work hardening, and thermal stability.
  • Extensive experience machining nickel-based superalloys such as Inconel, Rene, or Hastelloy, particularly for heavy-duty gas turbine or aerospace applications.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills and above-average shop math skills in geometry and trigonometry.
  • Experience with Vericut or other CNC verification or machine-simulation software.
  • Familiarity with multiple machine controls, including Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, and Siemens.
  • Experience machining high-temperature superalloys used in heavy-duty gas turbine or aerospace components.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize efficient CNC programs for complex multi-axis setups machining high-temperature superalloys.
  • Use Vericut or other digital-twin simulation software to validate CNC code and optimize toolpaths before production.
  • Develop adaptive probing routines, macro programs, and closed-loop machining processes.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineers and shop-floor teams to commission new machine tools and establish baseline machining standards.
  • Provide technical mentorship and support on the shop floor, including setup troubleshooting and first-piece component prove-out.
  • Support large VTLs, VBMs, 5-axis mills, and multi-purpose turn/grind machines up to 2.5 meters.
  • Generate and maintain CNC programs using NX-CAM or other software for milling, turning, grinding, and/or EDM.
  • Create programs in accordance with standards and qualified machining parameters.
  • Provide CNC-related support to Manufacturing Engineers and train operators during new or rebuilt machine startups and process improvements.
  • Provide daily CNC programming and troubleshooting support to shop-floor operators.
  • Support and implement tooling and fixturing requirements associated with CNC machine tools.
  • Generate and support workstation instructions (methods) for CNC-related issues.
  • Initiate and lead process improvement projects to improve safety, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with appropriate team members and work effectively both independently and in a team-based, matrixed organization.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment and embrace and drive positive change when appropriate.
