Lead Algorithm & Signal Processing Engineer

STR•Arlington, VA
•$157,000 - $220,000

About The Position

The Electronic Warfare and Novel Capabilities Group (EWNC) develops advanced signal processing algorithms and prototype systems for next-generation radar and electronic warfare technologies. The group works collaboratively with engineers across sectors and divisions, as well as researchers at academic institutions and industry partners, to develop practical solutions to RF sensing and counter-sensing challenges. The Lead Algorithm & Signal Processing Researcher develops state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques for sense making and sensor decision making, including signal detection and classification, electronic support measures, electronic attack and protection, and cognitive electronic warfare. The role involves designing signal-processing and machine-learning approaches, modeling and simulating advanced RF systems, leading small teams and projects, supporting business development and proposal writing, and collaborating on prototype-system capabilities. The position is ideally suited for a Lead Engineer, though applicants closely aligned with the requirements are encouraged to apply. Opportunities are available at multiple experience levels in the MA, VA, and OH offices. The role requires the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government for clearance eligibility.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government for clearance eligibility.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5–7+ years of relevant work experience depending on degree: BS with 7+ years or MS with 5+ years.
  • Experience in two or more relevant areas, including RF/radar signal processing, optimization, waveform design, electronic warfare, machine learning, adaptive signal processing, AI/ML algorithm development, algorithm development, test and evaluation, modeling and simulation, systems engineering, test engineering, radar modeling, or RF systems prototyping.
  • Proficiency in one or more scientific or mathematical programming languages, such as MATLAB, Python, and C/C++.
  • Strong mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Active security clearance.
  • Experience with defense-sector RF technologies, particularly sensing and electronic warfare applications such as electronic attack, electronic protection, cognitive EW, and advanced electronic support measures techniques and algorithms.
  • Experience with machine-learning tasks such as natural language processing, image recognition, semantic segmentation, and reinforcement learning; methods such as Bayesian, deep convolutional, and graph neural network methods; and tools such as PyTorch, Ray, TensorFlow/board, and MLflow.
  • Experience interacting with decision-makers and customers to translate mission needs into end-to-end analytical solutions.
  • Ability to apply novel, innovative, and interdisciplinary approaches to challenging engineering problems.
  • Ability to create and present briefings to customers and senior management that explain solutions at both high-level and deep technical levels.

Responsibilities

  • Design and apply signal-processing and machine-learning techniques to solve radar and RF sensing and counter-sensing challenges.
  • Design and implement models and simulations for advanced RF systems.
  • Lead small teams and projects.
  • Support business development and proposal-writing efforts.
  • Collaborate with diverse teams to deploy capabilities to prototype systems.
