Launch Engineer - Avionics Integration & Test

Stoke Space•Cape Canaveral, FL
•$104,500 - $240,100•Onsite

About The Position

Stoke is building Nova, a fully and rapidly reusable launch vehicle designed for daily flight. The Launch Avionics Integration & Test Engineer will integrate avionics flight hardware onto the launch vehicle during final build stages at the launch hangar at LC-14. The role requires understanding electrical, mechanical, and software interfaces and includes designing, building, and procuring electrical ground support equipment for hangar and launch-pad operations. Working with avionics, fluids, structures, software, and manufacturing teams, this engineer will define integration, electrical checkout, avionics test, and operational sequences leading to Nova’s first launch. The role also contributes to company standards for launch-site avionics integration and testing and requires the ability to stay focused, move quickly, self-direct, and learn on the fly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, mechatronics engineering, or a related computer or engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a related role working on avionics, electrical systems, flight termination systems for launch vehicles, or ground support equipment.
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of electrical design, integration, and testing.
  • Proficiency in creating and implementing procedures and automated test sequences.
  • Experience designing and building ground support or automation equipment for vehicle power-up, testing, and validation of launch vehicle systems.
  • Strong electrical engineering and/or RF fundamentals.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues with electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Hands-on experience with multimeters, clamp meters, oscilloscopes, megohmmeters, ground resistance testers, and/or loop impedance testers.
  • Proficiency with 2D CAD software and Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Visio.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work in indoor, outdoor, and marine environments.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a USSF background check for Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
  • Willingness to relocate to Cape Canaveral, Florida.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements for access to restricted technology and technical data.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating, testing, and operating complex multidisciplinary systems such as launch vehicles, satellites, aircraft, or automobiles.
  • Avionics/GNC hardware-in-the-loop simulation experience.
  • Experience developing assembly work plans or instructions for mechanical integration of avionics components and harnessing.
  • Environmental test experience.
  • Experience with Python, Rust, LabVIEW, LabJack, UEI, National Instruments hardware, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment for development testing of circuits and components.
  • Rigorous attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with AFSPCMAN 91-710 range requirements and DoD explosive siting for launch vehicle flight termination systems.
  • Experience working with 45th SW, 30th SW, NASA, or other government agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a complete understanding of the mechanical, electrical, and software interfaces required to integrate and operate the launch vehicle.
  • Own Nova stage integrated avionics systems from receipt and testing through integration and launch operations.
  • Develop electrical ground support equipment systems and integration and test plans for the complete stage and engine avionics system.
  • Coordinate with component owners, software teams, and other engineering disciplines to identify and correct integration issues early in the design cycle and streamline launch-site operations.
  • Facilitate or use hardware-in-the-loop test solutions to validate vehicle configurations and develop continuous-integration test objectives.
  • Plan, author, and execute system integration and vehicle checkout tests and sequences at the launch site.
  • Troubleshoot electrical hardware issues on the Nova vehicle and coordinate corrective actions and design changes with component owners.
  • Develop day-of-flight procedures and sequences for battery charging, avionics health checks, and vehicle launch and recovery.
  • Support integrated stage and hot-fire testing at Cape Canaveral.
  • Operate the vehicle avionics system during launch and recovery.
