Launch and Test Engineer III (Avionics)

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL
•Onsite

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Launch and Test Engineer III to join the Orbital Launch Site Test Operations team in the Launch Site Execution branch of the Launch Operations Division. Based at the Orbital Launch Site in Cape Canaveral, Florida, the engineer supports the design, construction, operation, maintenance, testing, inspection, and troubleshooting of launch and test facilities and ground support equipment. The work includes hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, cryogenic, electrical, and avionics systems, and includes front-room console support for New Glenn second-stage static hotfire tests. The avionics-focused role requires a strong avionics foundation and working knowledge of fluid and propellant systems commanded and monitored by avionics. The engineer supports flight and ground avionics during integrated fluid and propulsion testing, static hotfire testing, and launch campaigns, including real-time console operations and anomaly response. The team supports New Glenn launch infrastructure and test facilities, including Launch Complex 36, adjacent launch complexes, the Merritt Island Launch Annex, and the Module Test Area. The engineer helps ensure facility readiness through pre-flight verification, post-launch inspection, ground-system data review, maintenance, and commissioning of design changes. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all seasons. Shifts may be weekday or weekend day or evening shifts, with schedules subject to change based on launch and test cadence. Relocation is available, and travel may be required up to 25% for offsite test campaigns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, from an accredited university.
  • Direct experience operating or integrating avionics for cryogenic, fluid, or propulsion test stands and tests in a hands-on role; Level III Engineer experience is specified as 5 or more years.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the physical meaning of avionics commands and readings, including valve actuation, transducer data, tank pressures, and cryogenic loading sequences.
  • Real-time console operations experience, including off-nominal or anomaly response.
  • Hands-on experience with HIL/HITL, EGSE, command and telemetry, harnessing, and sensor or instrumentation integration.
  • Working knowledge of systems such as pressurized gas, cryogenic, fluid, hydraulic, instrumentation and controls, or structural systems, depending on discipline.
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware and instrumentation related to fluid, mechanical, and electrical systems, and ability to read schematics and P&IDs.
  • At least 1 year of experience developing work instructions or test procedures for upgrades, maintenance, and system-performance verification.
  • Strong commitment to safety and ability to execute or oversee multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to support off-shift work, extended hours, and weekends as required for mission milestones.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, climb multiple flights of stairs, and work at heights.

Nice To Haves

  • Launch-campaign console experience; familiarity with DAQ or automation; experience with New Glenn or a comparable launch vehicle.
  • Experience with a broad range of fluids, including cryogenics, monopropellants, hydraulics, or high-pressure systems.
  • Experience testing and integrating fluid systems, including ground support systems, cryogenics, and propulsion hardware.
  • Experience developing and verifying installation and operation procedures for mechanical, fluid, or electrical systems.
  • Experience with automated test equipment, calibration, and configuration management.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and fluid engineering fundamentals for design and verification, including test readiness and operational excellence.
  • Proficiency in LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, AutoCAD P&ID, Winplot, Windchill, CREO, or related control and data acquisition systems and software.
  • Experience with electrical equipment such as electronics, transducers, PLCs, and software systems.
  • Experience using AI to streamline workflows such as data review and test automation.
  • Background in hazardous operations, design for safety, and standards such as MIL-STD-810 and AS9100.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D CAD tools, fabrication, and integration processes.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of test facilities supporting orbital rockets, lunar spacecraft, and launch vehicle systems.
  • Generate and execute test procedures for high-pressure inert and non-inert gas systems and cryogenic and hypergolic fluid systems.
  • Work with technicians to maintain test facilities, handle test articles, and lead test operations.
  • Review and interpret test data to assess facility health and performance at system and component levels.
  • Size, select, troubleshoot, and maintain test, launch, and fluid-system components and instrumentation to ensure readiness for test and launch activities.
  • Perform Process Hazard Analyses and Hazard and Operability Studies to identify process safety risks, deviations, and operational issues.
  • Translate engineering requirements into repeatable test and maintenance processes.
  • Collaborate with design engineering, quality assurance, supply chain, and production teams.
  • Develop and maintain test documentation, work instructions, and inspection plans for routine and corrective maintenance of ground and test systems.
  • Support root-cause analysis of process or product non-conformances and develop and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure work aligns with applicable quality and safety standards, including AS9100 and ISO 9001.
  • Identify and implement efficiency, cadence, and cost improvements.
  • Support flight and ground avionics during integrated fluid and propulsion tests, static hotfires, and launch campaigns, including real-time console operations and anomaly response.
  • Perform pre-flight verification testing, post-launch inspections, and post-flight ground-system data reviews, and return facilities to launch-ready condition.
  • Draft and review work orders for routine and corrective maintenance, maintain facility and equipment configuration, and understand applicable system safety products.
  • Implement and commission engineering design changes that improve safety or reliability.
